Sometimes summoner can't cast - red MP cost

Hi. This is my first time playing this game. My character is a level 25 arcanist/summoner and I'm playing on the PS5. Sometimes, I can't cast and the cost of the spell is in red. This would usually make me think that I don't have the MP available to cast, but the MP bar says that I have a full 10k/10k MP.
So, what does it mean when the MP cost is red and I can't cast? Is my MP bar not updating and it's a bug, or is this something else? What can I do so that I can regain my ability to cast?

If you're talking about the cost on the icons, thats just the text color of the MP cost. It shows in red on other classes as well.

Target is out of range most likely.

There are some options that make it that you cannot cast if you are facing away from your target, check that in your character options. Also check you're within range.

(Usually, the text is a white/light pink, but changes to a dark red when it won’t let me cast. Usually, it tells me “target is out of range” if I’m out of range when trying to cast. But as this happens in the middle of a battle, we could have moved out of range.)

Note that "target is out of range" is also the error that displays if the target is not in front of you (yes, it's misleading, it annoys me too). There's an option to auto-face the target when you use an ability, though that option can easily get you killed if you're using Standard movement instead of Legacy (since Standard moves you based on your character's facing rather than your camera's facing). ie. you cast an ability when your target is beside you, then hit "W" and start running sideways (relative to your camera facing), because that's where your character is now facing.

Also note that if you're coming over from WoW, FFXIV requires that your target be in your forward 90 degree cone, not your forward 180 like WoW. It's much easier to have your target not be in your forward cone. Realistically, I'd recommend using auto-face + Legacy movement, as it basically entirely removes the notion of facing your target for casts (you can literally run directly away from a target and still attack it and cast things at it with autoface + Legacy movement), but short of that, you'll need to make sure you're turning to face your target, and specifically within that forward 90 degrees.
