Materia VIII vs IX

Why is 9 (+12) lower than 8 (+24) and actually more valuable?

Pentamelding purposes

Grade IX, like its ShB equivalent (VII), is the materia that can be used for any overmeld slots.
Grade VIII, like it's EW equivalent (X), can't be melded past the first overmeld slot.

okay I only meld through npc's so didn't know that.

You will notice a similar pattern if you compare the 7s to the 6s.

Yes, in the meantime I went back and check on older materia I have on retainers... I just didn't remember it at all.

Doesn't change that the naming pattern is odd....

Can't wait for Materia Grade 10-2, 11, 13, 13-Type 0, 13-2, 13-3 etc.
