At the current point in time, the level 90 job gear for RDM is the "Atrophy" set, a word with the charming dictionary definition of "wasting away through imperfect nourishment; emaciation".
Surely this cannot be the intent.
On the other hand we have the similar-sounding term "entropy", a concept which I am not going to pretend I understand, but the vibe of it is states of energy and cosmic forces in equilibrium - a far more red-magey prospect.
So did the wrong word get used? Unless there's some obscure secondary meaning of atrophy that I'm unaware of, it seems a bizarre choice of name for job gear. When I first heard someone reference the gear, I thought it must be some kind of ominous themed set from a late-game dungeon.

It's intentional. Artifact armor sets are named after sets from FFXI whenever possible, though I'm sure some older classes have already run out of names to draw from there.

XI RDM has an A+ ranking in Enfeebling Magic skill while all the other casters have a C or C+ ranking except for SCH, whose Enfeebling Magic skill ranking is naturally a D but could be buffed to B+ with 100% uptime. It's not a set that wastes away the user; it's a set for someone whose job is to waste away their enemies.Quote:
