Because nothing says fun like running circles around Limsa for over five hours to not get afk kicked while trying to get home.

Ugh, that's brutal. I went world-hopping last night, but it was at 1 am Pacific Time on NA servers, and I still hesitated a long while before doing it, for the all the terrible stories of long waits to port back to your home world. Luckily it went smoothly, with no wait whatsoever. I'd suggest avoiding peak times the next time you attempt it again.

Friend, they don't lock you in place during transfer because your boredom amuses them. They do it because the server can't keep track of you otherwise, and would have to reset your place in the queue every time you zoned.
