I don't personally believe I need to spend extra money to mask my ip b/c SE's upstream provider has a ton of packet loss.
Am I missing something or do you all think they will fix this soon?

what for? iam using one and dont get your point.
It really depends on your specific situation. For me, a VPN helps with online gaming in general - not because of packetloss but because of weird port blocking my ISP does. For you, it may or may not help.
I had a PIA subscription from before that I wasn't using much, been using the Cali node there for a few days and the 90006 errors haven't occured since, YMMV.
Doesn't have to do with masking your IP, it (can) change what route your traffic takes, and if you're lucky like me, avoid the problematic nodes along your original path.
