Game Crashes In Two Ways

I just came back to this game 1.5 weeks ago. Upon going into my Inn in Uldah and putting my character to sleep to log off I have gotten a game crash with a not responding message or w/e. So I just click cancel and close the game. Also the one time I was playing in full screen and used ALT+TAB the game also crashed. I am surprised they haven't fixed this yet. Is there any word if these two things are going to get fixed at all? Also being able to play in Windowed mode borderless? Or is there a way to fix this myself? I have been playing in Windowed mode for the most part.

At present, I have not seen anything on the ALT + TAB fix with DirectX (and likewise, if you CTRL + ALT + DEL or the UAC coming up).

I think someone may be able to direct you to the borderless window solution as I do not use that option myself.

The game crashes because it's a result of Tanaka insisting that they use DX9/D3D9 for Windows XP support. It's an almost 13 year old technology. When a full screen application is alt-tabbed, it loses the video device and it's unable to gain it again and therefore it forces a crash.

Supposedly the new client Yoshi is making has DX10 and DX11 support, which will allow alt-tab for computers running Vista, Win7 and Win8.

I hope that is true. I am running the game with Windows 7 64-bit

Fullscreen-tab out fix

1 - Go into the FFXIV configuration and set it to windowed mode, with the resolution being your screen's resolution.

2 - Download ShiftWindow

3 - After running the program, with FFXIV open, click grab and choose FFXIV.

5 - Trigger the rule

If the new client doesn't use DX10 or 11, then the same problem will be there. DX9 is old, busted, and largely unusable for modern programming and gaming.

Last I heard, Yoshi hired some people versed in Windows development though.

Happens to me quite often. Exiting crashes the game.

it has nothing to do with the dx version, its lazy developers (or cheap skate corporations, yeah thats you SE) that dont make a new dx object when it gets lost

DX9 is perfectly capable of supporting ALT + TAB on games, its just a shitty engine FF14 currently runs on, with FFXIV 2.0 the Game will still be DirectX 9 (but it WILL support ALT + TAB) but Yoshi has already said that once 2.0 is released they'll be working on a DX11 version.
