Selling Items to Retainers (Not getting any Gil)

This has happened twice now. At first, I thought I made the mistake and sold them on another retainer and that's why I couldnt tell the difference. I did the same steps today, and it would seem I am not making any gil selling to my retainer.

If the items you have your retainer sell are in your inventory, the gil goes onto your character, not the retainer. If the retainer is actually holding the items you have them sell, then they get the gil. Could that be the reason you’re not seeing retainer gil go up?
