Keyboard for chat with PlayStation?

Hi! I hope I selected the right part of the forum for this question. If not, feel free to tell me where to go, both literally and figuratively ;)

I am a sprout playing on PlayStation, & I want to connect a keyboard for chat, as 'typing' on a controller is cumbersome at best.

When I plug the USB into the PlayStation, it is recognized immediately on the PS dashboard, however, when I get into the game it does nothing. There is an option to play with mouse & keyboard, but never having been a PC gamer I want to use the controller for gameplay. I just want the keyboard for chat, so I can say "Hi, I'm new..." in dungeons etc...is there a way to do this?
My searches online have suggested it should 'just work', but not for me.

Do you have direct chat enabled? If you don't want to select the chat bar with your cursor before typing, then you need to enable direct chat under Character Config->Control Settings>General.
