Heya, wanted to throw this out there: I've been RPing a bit over WoW and just started over here (And it's been pretty fun RPing in FF14 thus far!) and I know you can work on every job without making a new character. However I kinda hate the trope of 'I'm the ultimate everything'. I like having characters with specific skillsets.
For RP purposes, do you think it's better to make a separate character for every job? Ferra's a MNK (Well, PGL in character: She doesn't buy into the 'chakra nonsense' as she calls it) but she wouldn't be caught dead mining for ore.

I tend to make characters, their backgrounds, personalities, occupation and such first, and choose the ingame job last. And because I like playing 'everyday men', their ingame job is not usually even ever brought up. So I tend to make alts as jobs that are the fastest to level (such as conjurer for instant queues), and if I feel they need a different job to correspond their role in roleplay, I'll unlock it if the original chosen one doesn't fit.
Although my main gameplay character (Fjrwn) has all jobs maxed out and is also in roleplay, I never bring attention to it and don't consider her to be of any of the jobs. She's an envoy to her village, a salve-maker and an elementalist (the viera job from FF Tactics Advanced). I don't think it's all set in stone, you can use your imagination. After all, it's not like the other roleplaying people's characters can see your character's name floating over your head or your job stone+icon while in-character. -

Thank you both for the input! I think it's a good idea to not focus on what the in-game job is, just what the character does. Ferra likes testing herself against strong things but certainly don't want to be a Monk for example.
I'll try to apply that to new characters I make. Thanks again! -

As stated above, I usually think of IC class/job last when it comes to the creative process of coming up with a new RP character. Sometimes I might know what job I can see them best on, and that job is usually their main if applicable to their background - but I heavily separate my in-game leveling process and personal class enjoyment from the IC profession my character has chosen.
Most of my leveling is done for personal reasons (I like having a tank, a healer, and a dps on basically most of my characters, it just makes doing roulettes more enjoyable when I'm not stuck on the same job forever), or more often for glamour in specific. Whatever classes I have leveled also don't come up much in RP (unless it's in a combat scenario), since usually I'm just on whatever allows me to wear a certain glamour I might want for an RP scene or the like. Usually my job glamours for doing content on, as well, have no real bearing on what they wear on the day to day - it's just what I think they look good in for that job. -

if you have an RP focus, not sure what jobs you do behind the scenes really matters. I understand that coming from WoW you are used to having 50 alts or so, but little need for that here. you can easily have a main job that is based on your character and the rest are OC.
trying to make the max number of alts here just seems more of a waste unless you need to have different races as well to fill out your mental landscape. in the end though, its all personal taste, its a game.... do what you want, not sure why you need guidance for what is ultimately personal preference on how YOU enjoy the game. -

With the exception of one certain Scion who happens to be a master omnicrafter and also a less-than-master arcanist, characters tend to stick to one class and only switch classes at major junctions in their personal stories.Quote:

One thing to keep in mind about alts is that since this game is designed around doing everything on a single character, almost nothing is account wide. You'll need to do the entire MSQ, all the unlocks, collect all the items, glamours, mounts, minions, titles, etc on every single character.

I tend to limit my characters to dipping their toes into one or two areas of expertise combat wise. Like my highlander is good with a sword/shield and unarmed, but just because I leveled white mage on her doesn't mean she can also icly heal. But I tend to, 'power level' wise, play my characters as skilled but not exceptional adventurers. Competent but not the best of the bestest. You don't have to give them any combat ability at all if you don't want to. Or you can go for something more advanced if you want to.
