You’ve mentioned before that when redesigning Final Fantasy XIV you looked to World of Warcraft as an example of a successful MMO. What aspects of the WoW model did you end up bringing to FFXIV?
If there was no World of Warcraft – which is a game we look to as a great ‘mentor’ of sorts, and respect deeply – FFXIV’s strong recovery wouldn’t have been possible.
Naturally this doesn't mean copy paste, but inspiration, yet showing again that WoW, among other MMOs (which he is aware and references many others, and shows them respect too), has had influence and it's not some grand sin to reference since Yoshida himself views games as a learning opportunity (as he should, its free high quality research- you'd have to pay significant money to get this level of market and prototype research and it's all free, I'm glad he looks out to other games because not doing that would be like trying to do a marathon with one leg). Of course I also feel this is how SE works with us, often I feel our feedback is represented in design with their own twists (especially when you make a time scale of about 6 months to a year, if not longer depending on request). Inspiration, good.
