What good are reduced taxes anymore?

The 3 starting cities never get any reduced taxes and I have no idea why. As for the other 3, I noticed that for a while now (several months), all of them have been stuck at the usual 3% reduction (I make sure to check every single week). If these reductions almost no longer change, why have them at all? And shouldn't the 3 starting cities be included in the reduction to spice things up a bit? I don't understand why they were excluded in the first place.

Are the reductions still changing for others? Did I miss something?

Edit: Not sure if everyone is aware of this but we now pay taxes regardless of where the item is listed. It's now pointless to travel to the city where an item is being sold to avoid paying the taxes.

I think they reduce the taxes so people are willing to put their retainers in the other cities. But nobody does that, so the majority of the retainers are in the starting cities and so the taxes never change. And since nobody cares about the taxes and buys always the cheapest item on top of the list, even if it becomes more expensive after taxes than an item wich is listed lower, why should anybody ever change the city of his retainer?

Because everyone was and continues to server hop in Limsa to check prices and that is where they were buying stuff. People put their retainers in Limsa to take advantage of the tax free sales.

This has been changed a few patches back so buyers will always pay taxes regardless of where the retainer is stationed and where they are buying from

Right now, having different taxes for sellers is pretty much useless, anyone who cares enough has no reason to not put their retainers up in Ishgard, Kugane or The Crystarium

i know they changed it. I used to actually travel to the city where the retainer was to save money on larger purchases. Limsa is the easiet location to server hop and I wouldn't be surprised the majority of sales take place there these days for high priced items at least.

Tax free sales have been gone for years. You pay tax regardless of where you buy it.

That was changed years ago. I'm guessing because having a tax free option reduced the MB's effectiveness as a gil sink. If you could save tons of gil for the cost of a teleport, why wouldn't you?

Yeah, I know this. The point of that edit was to make sure people who didn't know about that were made aware of it before they post their answers.
