PSA: You don't need the Token app to enable 2FA anymore.

So it's a good time to enable it for a free teleport if you use the Microsoft/Google/Aegis Authenticator.
I like having all of my codes at the same location, perhaps you do too? So maybe this post would be useful.

Although I have to say the "window" to enter your password doesn't seem to be very big. So if you find you're getting told you've typed in an invalid code, check the time AND timezone on your device to make sure they're correct.

For like the last 6+ years I've been used to loading the app THEN loading the game, but now I'm finding that means the code it generated 20+ seconds earlier will have actually expired by the time I type it in due to the very short window. Not a problem though, just load the app when you're actually ready to type it in. I'm just mentioning this in case anyone else gets caught out by it! :)

I am very torn about this. On my phone, I currently have two authenticator apps: one for FFXIV and another for all of my other accounts that support 2FA.

On the one hand, it's nice to have just one app.

On the other hand, I love, love, love how I never have to wait with SE's app. I type slowly, and if I open the other app and it's about to reset, I have to wait, and that happens often enough that it becomes annoying to use.

Plus, I have enough room on my phone, so it's not like I can't afford to have two apps, but it is visually nicer to me with less app.

Do you still need it every single time you login, though? What always bothered me is that, where other 2FA would only check me every month or so or when my login looks suspicious (such as logging in on another device), FFXIV was asking me every time I would log in.

Yes, you do need it every login. I think that's the point of having a 2FA. If it only checks every month, then the rest of the month, it's as if you don't have a 2FA.

The way I understand it is that things like what Esmoire is talking about will run a sort of check on your system and if it's different it will ask you for the code but if it recognizes it as the same as the previous log in it wont so it's still fairly secure. Blizzard's battle.net app works that way and also pops a prompt on your phone that asks you if it's you logging in rather than having you input a code which is super convenient. You also have the choice to disable that and input the code if you want.

On the WoW forum, there was a suggestion in a thread about being able to permanently delete a character over level 50, and one detractor said they can't have that because their sibling would delete their character.

I don't know if it's related, but this could cause issue on shared computers if that's the case. It may be an extreme example, but still, I think the possibility is there.

That said, being able to just acknowledge the login rather than manually type the numbers is a feature I like about Blizzard authenticator. I think you can have that to make it convenient if you're prompting at every login.

I imagine niche situations like that are why they give you the option to ask for authentication every time.

Indeed, though I think, when it comes to security, sometimes giving people option may be too risky when people have been shown to fall victim at what should've been obvious dangers, or sometimes people are not even aware that they are in danger through no fault of their own.

This is awesome, one more step to awesome then be allowing the FFXIV app to behave like WoW's and some others (some google stuff I use does this too) where you instead of having to type in the code you can press the button on the app to be like "yes, indeed let me in - I was just trying to login". So for WoW (blizzard really), you don't have to type in any codes but you can still use 2FA. Lazy mode engaged lol. (Keep the code option for those who prefer it of course, no need to force it onto people).
