No Arcanist Hero Journey sold (Mog Station)

Anyone know if the lvl 70 Summoner Hero Journey incidentally levels it's host class (Arcanist)? It does not appear to do so for the corresponding level 70 Red Mage's Hero Journey, another class based on Arcanist.

However, it does appear to do so for the case ARC lvl 1 + Bard Hero --> Bard lvl 70... in this case you go back and look at your Archer, that has also been leveled.

This becomes interesting if you promote an RDM and attempt to do a Retainer's Journey on his retainers... game says you cannot promote the Ret higher than your (still) level 1 ACN.

SMN = Arcanist. Arcanist = SMN. Arcanist = SCH as well. They are all one in the same. Leveling SMN also levels SCH so you actually get to level 2 jobs at once either through regular play or boosting. Arcanist also isn't tied to RDM. RDM is its own separate job. Neither is BRD. Not sure how you came to that conclusion.

If you use the hero's journey for scholar OR summoner, your arcanist, summoner and scholar levels are increased up to 70.

However, you only get the gear and job quest completion for the one you use. I assume either will complete the arcanist job quests too.

All job boost potions also level the base class if the job has a base class, because the class and job levels are always tied together. For exmaple thaumanturge and black mage level together, arcanist scholar and summoner all level together because summoner and scholar are both arcanist based.

New jobs added in HW and later do not include base classes.

Thanks to you both, all good info. I rebuilt the recent toons with SMN Hero Journeys and all is well. I wonder though, why, the SMN and SCH vs ACN promotion technology is functional, but not later versions. It sounds as if it was a deliberate choice to simply not put the effort into the process vs. newer job classes, to save money or time? I see no game-changing reason to deny RDM Hero = ACN Hero, and allow SMN Hero = ACN Hero. I don't even want to think about the Blue Mage in this picture - yahoo!

Because Archanist is the base class for both SMN and SCH but NOT RDM. Redmage has no base class. It was introduced in Storm blood, where they abolished the old cross-class system (from ARR/HW). None of the jobs introduced after ARR/HW have base classes. So DRK, AST, MCH RDM, SAM, DNC and GNB are all jobs with no classes attached to them. I assume you thought RDM was tied to ACN due to the heal and raise abilities but it isn't and never has been. You can tell when a class and job are connected because they'll have the same weapon type. Only WAR, PLD, MNK, DRG, NIN, BRD, WHM, BLM have classes which are MRD, GLD, PGL, LNC, ROG, ARC, CNJ and THM respectively.

Expansion jobs they decided to start off at a higher level. 30 for the HW jobs, 50 for the SB jobs, 60 for SHB, 70 for EW.

Because they start at these higher levels, the base classes that ran from 1 to 30 before you were supposed to upgrade to a job were redundant.

In part starting jobs at higher levels does cut down on some work. They don't need for example to have level 1-50 red mage quests if red mage starts at 50. But it's also convenient for veteran players to hop into new jobs without having to do as much grinding to catch up to level cap.

Only the ARR jobs have base classes. Ninja was released in...2.4 I think? Some time mid to late ARR, and it's the only post 2.0 job to have a base class, because it also started at level 1.

Because past level 30 the base classes become irrelevant and the jobs are what you're supposed to focus on, things like the jump potions just focus on the jobs, even though the base classes are also leveled with them.

Where are you getting that Red Mage is at all tied to Arcanist?

More to the point, you can see clearly what's at work if you pay attention to the experience you gain in game while using any job. Summoners don't gain "Summoner experience," they gain "Arcanist experience." Paladins don't gain "Paladin experience," they gain "Gladiator experience." Etc. This only applies to ARR jobs which "upgrade" from their base classes. Jobs such as Dark Knight, Red Mage, etc., do not follow this pattern, since they have no class prior to unlocking the job.

Another way to look at it: except for job-specific gear, anything equipable by an ARR job must also be equipable by its base class. You can, technically, still be a level 80 Arcanist (more technically, you already are, but with the assigned job of 'Summoner' via soul stone) and you can mostly be fully geared up as well.

He might be thinking that RDM is tied to Arcanist because of Alisaie. That's just a full job change, despite the fact that she generates her first sword from her ACN book.
