Can a retainer be a dancer?

Hello!

First off, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I wasn't sure where to put it :(

I was wondering if a battle retainer could be a dancer, and if yes how? Thank you in advance!

Sorry, currently they can only be the core jobs (like Gladiator) which eventually get job stones (like Paladin). Any expansion job is currently out.

...though I would expect this to be overhauled at some point!

Cannnnnnncel that; turns out they did indeed make this possible.

You just need retainer level 60 + modern vocation item.

This is correct; ignore my above post. You just need to level it to 60 and have a copy of “modern vocation”.

You have to start them as a class such as Gladiator, Thaumaturge, Conjurer, etc. Once they reach the level that the job is unlocked, (50 for AST, MCH, DRK, RDM and SAM, 60 for DNC and GNB) You can purchase an item called "Modern Vocation" from the retainer Vocate. Using this will allow you to select the job for them the jobs they are of level to use.

Keep in mind that once you do this and give your retainer a Job, it cannot be changed to any other job. If you've already made your retainer a Summoner for example, then the only way to have them be a dancer would be to reset their job to a base job and start back at level 1, and then level them up to level 60 to be able to give them Dancer.

Retainers are very particular about their allowed jobs.

Every retainer must start as a class.
At Lv30, you have the following options:

1. Upgrade to the job associated with their class
2. Upgrade to a HW job (AST DRK MCH)
3. Wait

If you choose to wait, they have the following options at Lv50:

1. Upgrade to the job associated with their class
2. Upgrade to a HW job (AST DRK MCH)
3. Upgrade to a SB job (RDM SAM)
4. Wait

If you choose to wait again, they have the following options at Lv60:

1. Upgrade to the job associated with their class
2. Upgrade to a HW job (AST DRK MCH)
3. Upgrade to a SB job (RDM SAM)
4. Upgrade to a ShB job (DNC GNB)
5. Wait

Once you change their job, you forfeit all future job change opportunities. So if you want a DNC retainer, you have to start from Lv1 as any class and then keep them on that class until 60. If you think you'll want to change a retainer to Sage or the future DD job, you will need to start a retainer from Lv1 and keep them as a class until Lv70.
