Reddit your friend these days. Though be prepared to shell out a LOT of gil.
Otherwise, sit at a place card to an empty plot (if a M does even open) and pray you beat everyone or that someone don't come in and reloc.
You can also just sit at an empty small plot... hope you beat everyone to that and then when more housing open (gods only knows when) reloc to the M or L house you want (if you can beat the mad rush), you won't have to fight a timer if you reloc.

As Jojoya(?) said in another thread recently, auto demolition timers were reactivated December 8th, so sometime on January 22nd, there'll be a small surge of demoed houses.

Because of the purchase timer, other players can't simply sell their house to you. The moment they relinquish the plot, it goes on a purchase hold timer. Only players who already own a house can relocate to the plot while that timer is active. If the plot is still available when the timer ends it goes to the first player to click the placard to purchase it, which may not be you or your friends.

Mediums disappear to relocation almost as soon as they appear. That's why I suggested in the other thread that you buy whatever small you can find now. You could then immediately relocate if you happen to find an available medium.

Your other option would be to acquire a FC that happens to own a house you want. It's not going to come cheap. It's going to cost you hundreds of millions of gil.

House availability is a problem in the game right now, with the player population greatly exceeding the number of houses per world. We don't know if Ishgard housing will be an improvement to the system that solves the problem or just another bandaid, and it's still months away from being added.

Lots of robbing of gil on reddit these days, be warned, you may support the RMT chain, and also these house plots is sold for much more than what they are worth, meaning it is ToS material as well.
