FF11 mobile cancelled?
https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxi/comments/kdiokr/sothe_ff11_mobile_game_seems_to_be_cancelled/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
On one hand, I'm not surprised.
Like, it's an outsourced smart phone remake of an MMO from 20 years ago. It was originally set to be release 4 years ago, and we still haven't seen a trailer.
A mobile MMO that isnt gatcha based just wont work anymore I think. Genshin Impact is having some big ripples. A big... IMPACT if you will.
On the other hand...
SQEX seems determined to keep 11 at least somewhat relevant, so I wonder what their next 11 move might be (since I think they're still planning something for it's big anniversary in 2022).
Also, a few years ago I heard some rumbles about them trying to make a single player version of FF11? Has anyone heard anything further about that or is it just a dead rumor at this point?

While I loved FFXI, the things that made me love that game I do not see translating to a mobile game well at all.
It would have to be changed in its core design to work on that platform. Smaller groups/solo focus, shorter play sessions, shorter duration bosses, reduced world size, reduced economy, reduced complexity due to limited controls, ect.

Honestly, whatever plans they may have had at the start of the year most likely went out the window. They've probably had to prioritize and reprioritize things pretty regularly. It's...hard to say what the fate of FF XI is at the moment. Heck, they may not know much themselves.

I have my doubts on 11's staying power. That it has lasted this long, even in the face of not only WoW reinventing itself, but Square going through TWO different MMO entries since 11 (FFXIV legacy and ARR), is something of a miracle considering how utterly dated the game is.

Hopefully whatever work was put in on up-scaling the resolution can be salvaged for a in house undertaking.

I assumed that they were only going to put out the mobile version when the real game's subscriptions dwindled. And I think the game got a bit of a bump when Ninja streamed it, and it's probably still profitable for SE.
Also, I thought it was originally supposed to be a faithful recreation, but reading this it sounds like they wanted to put TCG elements in it? Then I guess it's fantastic news that it was cancelled. It would've just been another FF Grandmasters.

I believe if SE jumped on the classic bandwagon with ffxi. Like FFXI Classic it would go over very well. Put it back on PlayStation and Xbox as well as PC. I know I’d play it. PUP forever.

On a selfish note, as someone who never played FFXI or DQX, I want SE to end them both and make a new MMORPG while still continuing FFXIV. It doesn't have to be another Final Fantasy game, could be another IP or a new one altogether (or it could be another FF too). But I want less technology/more ancient fantasy setting.
I play MMORPG for the story, so if the combat is as easy to get into as FFXIV and the same/similar QoL features are there, another one would be great to have.

The biggest problem I see with XI is getting started. The way you set up an account, install it and log in isn't so much archaic, as it's just bad. The interface is poor even for it's time.
They should make the FFXIV launcher into the SE launcher and let people install XIV, XI and maybe even DQX (like that would ever happen) right from the launcher.

Given that Nexon had their hand on it, I'd figure we are glad they dropped the title.
Anything they touch gets turned into a microtransaction mess.
