Darker skin tones less visible in game than in character edit/creation preview scenes

Bought a Fantasia, meant to make my viera's skin darker. In the preview scenes everything looked fine. Upon starting the game and continuing the story, my face was mostly inscrutable in cutscenes. It really impacted my ability to enjoy the story when I can hardly tell where half my features start. Again, not an issue in the previews.

I had to use another Fantasia to lighten my skin up just to be able to see my features.

Prior to doing so I had tried adjusting settings, had tried looking at my character from my partner's setup. Nope.

This inconsistency wasted a Fantasia that support refuses to return to me, instead inviting me to just supply feedback. I'm very unsatisfied with this. I did everything right. I spent my time on it and had to immediately adjust it.
