Why are DoW/DoM retainers max level 70

This seems a bit odd since it prevents me from gathering level 70+ stuff with them. I also think it has an impact on Quick Exploration loot.

DoW and DoM retainers can go up to level 80. Their max level is dependent on your max level of the job you gave them, e.g., if you have DRG to level 70 and your DoW retainer is a DRG, they can only be level 70 until you start leveling DRG.

Looking at your Lodestone, the only DoW/DoM jobs that you have above level 70 are PLD (level 80) and RDM (level 77). Unless your DoW/DoM retainer is a PLD or RDM, you’ll have to deal with them being level 70 until you start leveling other jobs.

Yeah, it hit me hehe. I bought a level 70 retainer boost and tried changing one of them to gladiator, and it worked. But thanks anyway! :)
