Kinda a weird topic for the board, but I was wondering if, (going off the AF) crafting gear (Primarily those fitting a BSM or ARM) fits the job better than Aiming gear.

The job pretty much goes 1:1 with BSM. The lore of the job heavily involves the engineering and implementation of armory from guns, to rifles, to cannons. They would even be tasked with arming Ishgards aerial force. The guild NPC (forget his name) dons BSM attire, and BSM is required to craft the weapons the job uses. Slap a cowboy hat on a BSM and you got yourself a MCH.
Aesthetically it's closer to gatherer gear than crafter gear, I think - although there's some overlap with those of course. The standard uniform for guild machinists is ARR gathering gear; Mide wears the Forager's shirt and Hilda's jacket is for DRG but reused for crafter/gatherer. There's also the design originating as the Wrangler's set for aiming DPS, reused for two things: Lv63 gathering gear (cloned as Anemos glamour) and the GNB starter gear. So there's a recurring tie between the "gunner" classes and gathering gear.
To be exact, he's wearing the MCH relic gear but with the BSM bandana-and-goggles. Though if you pay attention he never fights as a machinist. The closest he gets is wielding a gun to scare someone off, but usually in fights he's either taking a backseat command role or fighting with a rather small wrench. So yeah, if going by game classes, he's a blacksmith - with a side of goldsmith since they usually get assigned crafts like clockwork items.
Considering the aiming gear has Robin hood outfits for BRD and skimpy / flowing garments for DNC... Yeah the aiming sets are super hodge podge.
I can totally see where you're coming from.
