Newb question..

What do the colored tiles on the floor with the symbols during big fights mean? For some reason I cant find this information anywhere and got crap for it during gameplay. Can anyone help?

That depends on the fight. What duty were you doing at the time?

That's a vague enough description that I'm not sure which fight you mean. Usually if there's an area with a symbol in it, as opposed to just an area, the mechanic is specific to that fight so looking up a guide for the fight will be your best bet. If you let us know which fight it is we can also help.

It was against Ifrit. I see all these different colored squares on the battlefield with A, B etc.. kept getting messages to stand in them during certain actions from Ifrit to not die. What confuses me is how can you even tell which one to stand in..

I'll look into a guide, hopefully that helps.

Some bosses have AOEs with thematic styles attached to him. When the floor lights up, you don't stand in what lights up. Because then you'll get burned.

Oh, those are player placed markers to help the group know where to stand for certain mechanics. Those are always specific to a fight and sometimes even to a group, since there's occasionally more than one strategy. Watching a guide with an eye for where people need to stand at what time will help you understand what mechanic those markers are there for.

As an aside, people do sometimes use them for fun too so they don't always mean something. That's usually easy to figure out, though, since it does something like spell a word. Most of the time they're there as a party aid, however.

Yeah, outside of extreme and savage, you usually won't see them unless someone is just goofing off. Only time you'll frequently see them in normal tier content is during alliance raids to direct each party to their add during add phases.
