Lost retainer MCH 60 progress while trying to switch job to GNB

I decided switch my MCH 60 to GNB.

According to retainer vocate: I need a job for retainer level 60 disciple of war or magic for GNB.

I reset retainer's job and lost all progress. Now GNB or MCH no longer a option.

What did I do wrong? or is it a design oversight?

It's been a while but iirc I don't think you've done anything wrong. You choose any class and level them to the level you need and then at that point do the job selection. Just make sure you keep it a class until then. Once you select a job you can't switch it without resetting to level 1 like you did. It's not very intuitive.

Here is problem I have experienced.

I have BRD 50 MCH 80 GNB 80 jobs:

I level retainer to BRD 50 and changed to MCH until 60 level and tried to change GNB whole progress gone.
Now I have only 1 option level 1 bard on retainer job choice. I am not sure what I did wrong but clearly something wrong :)

That's because Bard is a 2.0 job. They're available without needing any requirements. Once you choose a job stone for a retainer you cannot switch it.

The only thing wrong you did was assume that you can switch from one job stone to another job directly without resetting back to level 1.

I think they should include it retainer vocate NPC information because information seems outdated.
"Your retainer must have archived level 60 as a Disciple of War or Magic WITH a ARR JOB starts from level 1".

Are you sure it said job and not class?

I haven't tried switching a retainer to a ShB job yet but in Stormblood you could switch your retainer from a base class to either the upgraded job for their class OR any of the expansion jobs. Once you upgraded, you couldn't change them again.

Are you sure that you changed your retainer from Lv50 BRD to MCH, or was it from ARC (archer) class to MCH? You also mention having a "level 1 bard" which is impossible, so I think you're getting archer/bard confused.

Most likely, you need to level your retainer to Lv60 without upgrading from class to job, and upgrade to GNB at that point.

Main JOB (ARR Jobs) can switch to -> Expansion Jobs H.Ward / Storm Blood / SHB

Not going to work like this:
Expansion Jobs H.Ward / Storm Blood -> SHB Jobs

The explanation is confusing because you don't seem to be noticing the difference between a class (the base form of ARR jobs without a soul stone equipped) and a job (the advanced form of a class, with soul stone equipped).

Your retainer will not start with the "bard job".

Your retainer will be "archer class".

You could upgrade the archer class to bard job OR upgrade the archer class to gunbreaker job.

BUT if you upgraded to bard (or machinist) you cannot upgrade bard to gunbreaker because you can't go from one job to another. Only from class to job.

Your MCH retainer can never become a gunbreaker without resetting their level and raising them again as an archer* and not upgrading to anything else to Lv60. So do that with the retainer you already reset.

* if you had other ARR classes unlocked and levelled, you could use those. But you only have archer, so that's what you need to use.

In addition to this, there are some restrictions on your choice of retainer's job based on which class you choose for them:
(N.B. Much of this is info already provided above. I'm just including it for clarity and having it all in one place.)

• When you hire a retainer (or reset it back to level 1) you first must choose a class: Gladiator, Marauder, Pugilist, Lancer, Archer, Conjurer, Thaumaturge, Arcanist, or Rogue.
• You can choose a job for your retainer with the following restrictions:
  1. All of the classes can change to their associated ARR job once they have reached level 30. E.g. Gladiator can become a Paladin, Marauder can become a Warrior, Archer can become a Bard, etc. You must also have the job at level 50 on your own character to be able to choose this for your retainer.
  2. All of the classes can change to any of the Heavensward, Stormblood or Shadowbringers jobs once they have reached the required level: 50 for HW and SB jobs (DRK, AST, MCH, RDM, SAM) and 60 for ShB jobs (DNC, GNB.) You must also have the job unlocked and meet the same level requirement with your own character to be able to choose this for your retainer.
  3. Classes cannot become ARR jobs that are not associated with their class. E.g. Archer retainers cannot become Paladins, Warriors, Monks, Black Mages, Scholars, etc.
• Once a job is selected it is locked in. You cannot change from one job directly to another job or even change back to a class. This is of special importance if you want one of the HW, SB or ShB jobs because you will need to keep the retainer as a class until they reach the necessary level. I.e. Switching to the ARR job when it becomes available will lock you out of the HW, SB and ShB jobs.
• You can reset a retainer to erase all of their progress and start over. E.g. if you want to change from Machinist to Gunbreaker, or from Arcanist to Bard then you would have to reset your retainer and choose a class option that would allow choosing the desired job. Choosing the Archer class would work for both of these examples.
