Are you on a battle job? The fate won't work on a crafting/gathering job. There are no eggs in your inventory; it shows up as an action on your cross hotbar.

I found out my dancer was bugged on the crossbar the action never showed up to give out gift. I switched to my white mage and was able to complete the fate finally. Sucks I dropped the quest 4 times thinking it was bugged some how.
