New player with yet another simple question

I only have ARR because it was cheap and only wanted to give it a try.
Long story short: loving it, max level, finished story, etc.
Now the thing is in most games I'm the full plate heavy 2 handed weapon type of character and the closest thing I saw was the lancer/dragoon so I went with it, since all the other options are tank jobs and I don't think I'm quite ready yet to assume that responsibility. Now, there's another job that got my eye and that's the machinist, unlocked, I know, only on HW.
So, more than asking a question, I'm more looking for a confirmation: if I got it right from wikis and stuff, I don't need to level any other class to get this job? Just do the quest that unlocks at HW and that's it? And it starts at level 50? Really?

It starts on lv 30 :) And yes, no other class/job needs to be unlocked in order to unlock Machinist :)

There are no requirements to unlocking MCH other than be in HW content, yeah.

To unlock Machinist you just need access to the city of Ishgard, which you get right at the start of the HW MSQ. No other classes or jobs required (needing secondary classes leveled to unlock jobs used to be a thing but was removed in SB.)

All expansion jobs start at higher levels. The HW jobs (MCH, AST, DRK) start at level 30, the SB jobs (RDM, SAM) at level 50, and the ShB jobs (DNC, GNB) at level 60.

I'd actually encourage you to give tanking a try. It's really not that difficult, and the community tends to be understanding if you're learning the ropes, especially if you tell people at the start of a dungeon you're new. Then you can go full dark knight for your platemail 2h dream ;)

It's not the tanking itself that scares me, as I really really like to be a tank. The problem is knowing my way around... I get lost A LOT in real life, I have what you call a terrible lacking in "sense of direction" and that also happens in video games. I have to play the game hundreds of time (hyperboling of course, but I still get lost in Bloodborne for example) to finally know my way around and I'm so new to FFXIV that I'm embarrassed to get into a dungeon and not knowing where to go.
I did some tanking back in WoW with alts but because I was confident enough for knowing every dungeon like the back of my hand.
But yes, darknight is like a wet dream coming true. Thank y'all for yer replies.

Most dungeon are linear.
You'll never be lost.
Besides, if you say you're new to tanking, people are nice and understanding.

There are groups who will follow the tank no matter where they go. There are also times in lv 80 content where the tank got lost and dragged two other people with them.
