After Windows 10 update, no sound from speakers

I can plug in headphones and I get sound, but otherwise, nothing. This happens regardless of whether I start the game up with headphones in, or not, and even if I plug headphones in and then unplug them while playing. I've tried restarting the game and my computer multiple times. I've also checked FFXIV-specific sound settings in Windows 10 - they look fine.

I'm on Windows 10 Pro 1903. My last updates were these:

The game should use the default audio device of the PC. Check the sound settings for Windows 10 and see if the updates changed anything.

Can you submit a Final Fantasy XIV system report? Simply go to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display.'

Could you try doing a clean boot? To perform a clean boot for Windows 8/10: Open the task manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC) and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC.

I followed these instructions, but unfortunately it did not change the behavior. I was able to reproduce all the same problems after the clean boot. I also tested to confirm that a second program (another game that came pre-installed with Windows) also has sound. FFXIV is the only application exhibiting this behavior.

Well, I'm happy to report I've solved the problem. I still don't quite understand how or why it was happening, but here's what I discovered. In my start bar, my sound shows as speakers unmuted. In my sound settings, it also showed as speakers unmuted. However, in my ADVANCED sound settings, it showed FFXIV muted. I have never gone there or changed it to mute... but... well, there you have it. So, if this happens again, I know where to look. In the meantime, I have my game sound back!
