Yorha Type 51 Armour Sets aren't hinting to a new Yorha Type, it's simply a pun with the Patch. 51. Patch 5.1.

In NieR: Automana, there was a few Type-# weapon sets too. There was the Type-3 weapons which were supposed to be old, serviceable models. And there was also Type-4O weapons which were the latest weapons to come out. It was fun seeing the naming scheme of the armor for the first time!

Some part of me can't help but wonder what would be the plan for the WoL in Yoko Taro's mind

I remember distinctly he felt that a character in video games that kill so many don't deserve happy endings.

Considering his mindset, we're probably the sickest character type out there.

We routinely kill for items and leveling up.
In 2.0
Farming Garleans for example for the Visor.

In 3.0

We want to end the Dragonsong war, but we're literally wearing gear that's made of them. Kind of hard to negotiate when you might be wearing their cousin Larry (sorry I don't know Dragon related names) :P

Although some of the fights we repeat with primals like EX are an elaborated version "dream" by the Wandering Minstrel that we farm for a mount or weapon, still makes you wonder...

Well... the WoL has to survive the Raid... It's everyone else that is expendable...

And for all that Yoko Taro says characters that kill in video games don't deserve happy endings...

(massive spoilers for how NieR: A ends)

All the main characters of NieR: Automana kill a lot of machines and if you get Ending E, they all end up surviving, complete with all their memories. They also aren't tied to any specific faction anymore as YoRHa is gone and the main machines that wanted to kill the Androids are all dead or left (depending on if you are in Route C or D).

2B is really 2E, an assassin. Her entire job revolves around killing 9S whenever he learns too much. By the time of NieR: A, she's done this several times over. It's to the point 9S had figured out she was really 2E and the one who was killing all his previous selves. 9S himself hates machines and basically wants all of them dead. A2 has been killing machines for a very long time too and has even killed some of 9S's previous selves a few times since YoRHa wants her dead for desertion. So they all pretty much get the best ending they could hope for, one that frees them from their former lives where they had to kill stuff.

The Machines themselves aren't immune from dodging the consequences of killing a lot of androids either. Specifically in Route D. The Terminals (Red Girls), Adam, Eve and the rest of the machine network end up storing themselves on a giant computer and launching themselves into space to travel the stars. They even give 9S the opportunity to join them and he can say yes. And the Terminals are the ones who decided to kill the machines original creators and keep the (pointless) war against the Androids going. And the ones that decided to drive 9S crazy and kill all the YoRHa androids with a logic virus the androids had no hope of surviving. Adam and Eve pretty much wanted to kill everything for various reasons (Adam loved the concept of "hate", Eve just wanted to destroy the world after 2B killed Adam). And all of them can get away with it in Route D...

So it's very much possible for all the major players in NieR: A to get "good" endings if not happy ones. In spite of the fact that they've all killed tons of androids/machines.

As for the "timeline" of the raid...

Somehow the machines and YoRHa androids get to the 1st Shard and the Factory gets built. We have no idea when this happened, or how it actually ties into NieR: A yet. And given that this is Yoko Taro we're talking about... it's highly likely we won't find out how this happened until the very last raid. (Although Route D in NieR: A seems like a really good fit for a "machines and 9S on a different planet" scenario...)

2P and 9S (and other androids from the sound of it) are all looking for the Factory. For whatever reason, 2P doesn't want 9s (and the other andorids) to take over the factory. Somehow a lot of 2B androids get killed in the Factory during this time. We have no idea how this happened...

The Raid happens. 9S has taken over the Factory and is controlling the machines in it. 2P and the WoL clear out the factory. 2P and the WoL fight against 9S. He is thrown down into the depths beneath the Factory.

2P shuts down and is finally discovered to be an android. The WoL explores the factory. 9S is found and taken in by the Dwarven Twins. A broken pod is found. No one has any idea what is really going on!

It always bears repeating that for most of Yoko Taro's games, the player doesn't have a solid idea of the actual backstory of the setting/story until the very last section of the game. Then a bunch of lore gets dumped on the player... which answers a lot of questions, proposes several more unanswered questions and turns the angst factor up to eleven. So not knowing what is really going on right now is very... normal... for a story by Yoko Taro...

since you mentioned nier automata and yoko taro, isn't this whole thing kind of odd tbh?

i have a few points that makes me think that there might be something misleading in the story:

1.the machines didn't attack us first ,they attacked 2p so basically the WOL is the one started it even if its to protect someone.

2. 2p is an android meaning that the body can be replaced by her at any given time meaning she might not be the AI known as 2p but could be someone else controlling a 2p body model. 9s already did a stunt like that at route A in nier:A

3.if the machines are there for a long time and they are an enemy,why haven't they attacked any humans at any given time and simply waited?.

4. 2p never mentions why the machines are enemies tbh or what are they planning.

5.since they don't know us ,we are basically trespassers however hobbes call us volunteers and not hostile/enemies/trespassers or anything like it and engles only activates his defense and offensive protocals due to us attacking him.

6. 9s dialogue states that he attacks us only because we help 2p and pretty much ignore our existence and talks about finishing only her.

7.lastly and this is the weird part,during his cutscene of his fall 9s eyes were normal and not red.

i think yoko taro is pulling the same thing he did in nier and nier:A and try to make us believe the machines are villains when they might not be or even some sort of innocent of any crime.

Well... I think the Machines are the villains of NieR: A. Not all of them are of course, but all the significant enemies who are pulling the strings in NieR: A and know they are doing so are machines...

I think the androids are probably the biggest victims in NieR: A. The Machines are purposely fighting a war they are not letting the androids lose because the machines need an enemy to fight because of their programing. The Androids could actually not fight the machines if the machines left them alone while the machines don't really get a choice in fighting nor not because their programing is a lot more restrictive then the Androids' programing is. And the machines reaction, (particularly the Terminals) to finding this out is taking advantage of the Androids' back-door into the YoRHa server and killing all the Androids because as far as the machines are concerned, they don't need the androids anymore if they can get to the humans...

Like, yes... the Machines are sentient. So are the Androids. The Androids have every right to fight for their own existence and keep the Machines from killing them. No android in NieR: A ever questions if they should not be fighting the Machines that are trying to kill them. What really gets to them, especially 9S, is that the Androids though they were fighting for Humanity to come back to Earth, and it turned out Humans were dead the entire time. Which causes 9S to wonder why they are fighting at all if there's "no point" to fighting the Machines. The Androids exist to serve humanity, and there's no humanity to serve. However, the big point of NieR: A, particularly Ending E, is about existing for your own sake, not the sake of what you were programed to do. That is what the Machines like Pascal figure out. It's what 2A, 9S, and A2 (and the Pods!) learn over the course of the game as well.

And Yoko Taro is most definetly misleading us... probably about a lot. That was my entire point about saying we don't actually know what the back-story of most Yoko Taro games is until the very end. Much like in NieR: A though, there's no point in not fighting the machines, since they do want to kill us and everything has the right to fight for its existence.

Surviving isn't necessarily a "happy ending" (to a degree sacrificing isn't necessarily a bad one)
Unless Yoko creates some crazy ending I think it was pretty common sense we'd be surviving.

I wouldn't be surprised getting a "feelsbadman" kind of ending for existing the way we do.

While I'm sure it'll all end up in a singular way, I like the idea that your 'choice' with the Dwarves may resonate with 2B and 9S in some way. After all, one is dressed in White and one in Black, much like the androids themselves. One wants to rush in headfirst and discover as much and as quickly as possible, the other wants to exercise a bit more caution and figure things out first. I imagine the White one would rush things and assume 2B is the inherently good one and re-activate her, whereas the chap taking his time might figure out that 9S isn't as bad as may be implied by simply being a 'last boss' of the tier.

All I know is, at the conclusion, we have two de-activated androids and are on the hunt for a means to reactivate them, though I believe it was hinted we could only activate one (but that could be wrong). We saw a lot... LOT of dead androids in the factory and there's various mentions of very specific endings when referring to those and 9S.

Either way, as a non-Nier player, it has still been an enjoyable ride and I look forward to how it pans out - leaving all the actual speculation to the Nier-heads. Let's hope you all get a nice big surprise!
