Overlaying a bit of text onto crafting (or other) icons/symbols?

Icons for some crafting skills are similar, strikingly so in many cases. One tasty example, the icon for "Reflect" and the icon for "Inner Quiet" are identical. Similarly, "Prudent Touch," "Basic Touch," "Precise Touch," and "Focused Touch" are, again, very much alike. If you're into a lengthy crafting session, it doesn't take long before said icons are confused with each other; despite the available mouse-over differentiation. It would be nice to add 3, 4, maybe 5 alphanumeric characters superimposed right on top of the icon artwork. Does anyone have a way of doing that? So far, my research into this hasn't yielded anything, so a tip or two in that direction would be muchly appreciated! Thanks for any ideas!
