Just walk away!

To close your retainer interface, you should just have to walk away from the summoning bell, not back out of every menu one level at a time.

Walking away works for the market board and vendors, so why not retainers?

I agree this would be nice although the most recent change of the retainer interface was so good I am ok with it. Fully backing out of each retainer before you could access the next was pretty terrible. Glad that nightmare is over.

I would respect my retainers more if they stopped bringing me nearly worthless rocks and fish. I will admit, however, that it probably does take an hour of work to remove the roof from someone's house. So I admire their dedication to the cause.
