Moogle Lore

I have many questions about moogles. If anyone knows the answers to these or can point to quests in FFXIV please do so!

1. Apparently there are female and male moogles (according to descriptions of the Moggle Guard from the Thornmarch fight), but how do they reproduce? Are there moogle eggs? Live births? Or magically born from aether?

2. When it’s explained that the Moogles came from the heavens on a ladder anchored by King Moggle Mog, is that considered the Churning Mists? Or is there a higher heaven they came from?

Also, how did they get to be living in the Twelves Woods?

3. What does it mean to have different colored poms? Is it just a location thing? What gives then a different color?

1) To quote EE Vol 1: "Moogle reproduction in particular is a subject of enduring mystery, with any direct inquiries into the matter being casually deflected or simply ignored." We know that Moogles do identify with a particular gender, but how that correlates to their sex is unclear.

2) It's not exactly clear, but the implication is that the Shroud Moogles are a descendant branch of the Moogles from the Churning Mist. Good King Moggle Mog's story is old enough (possibly dating to before the First Umbral Era) that how much of it is legend and how much is fact remains murky, but the similarities between the two groups are striking enough to suggest that some of the Churning Mist Moogles departed to form the community in the Black Shroud.

3) Again drawing from EE, Moogle poms actually change color depending on mood, so they aren't a static color.

1. While it's not really confirmed, I have a sneaking suspicion that moogles are mammals. Furry and all that.

2. It's not confirmed, but it is heavily implied that the the "heavens" the moogles descended on a ladder from anchored by Good King Moggle Mog XII was indeed the Churning Mists. Presumably they simply migrated from wherever is underneath the Churning Mists (Abalathia's Spine? Abalathia?) to the Twelveswood.

3. Aside from emotional states changing pom colors (like Flumphs in D&D), there appears to be a little bit of realistic evolution going on. The Twelveswood Moogles have normally orange poms, while the Churning Mists Moogles have pinkish poms. (Do ones on the First have different colored poms? I think they might be sky blue, but I'm too lazy to jump on just to check.)

One thing I wonder until now, how does mog's pom taste.

1. I think it's pretty safe to assume that they're mammals and probably better to leave it at that. ;)

2. A series of quests in Moghome during Heavensward actually dealt specifically with the legend of Good King Moggle Mog and confirmed that the moogles on the surface did come from the Churning Mists (so therefore the 'golden rope' would be a very close match to the transporter to Halo) - incidentally 'Good King Moggle Mog' was actually Chieftain Moggle, the first chieftain of Moghome:

As Cilia mentioned above the colour of moogle poms indeed seems to differ depending on their location, with the moogles of the First apparently having blue poms (as depicted in the SHB opening trailer, in the scene in the Crystarium moogles with blue poms can be made out next to the aetheryte), the latter very much in keeping with the First's depiction as being a 'bizzaro-Hydaelyn'. Of course Square Enix Visual Works (who actually are the ones who produce the CG opening movies, not the FFXIV Team themselves) often do make mistakes due to using innacurate or early information or designs that change after the CG trailer has already been produced (Hraesvelgar appearing as the antagonistic dragon during the Battle of Ishgard instead of Nidhogg who it actually should be in HW's opening is a well known example of that), but I'm pretty certain in this instance, it is indeed accurate, and that the moogles of the First do have blue poms.

The mail delivery service extends to the First (somehow) and the local postmoogles do have blue poms.

Also Nutsy, leader of Clan Nutsy, has a blue pom as well.

But more on the specifics of your point, our mail is actually transferred to the First(which just so happened to coinicdentally develop a moogle based mail delivery system) by Feo Ul, who goes over to Eorzea's post-moogle to get the letters. Or at least that is what I think is implied:

It's probably one of those "gameplay conveniences handwaved by lore" things, but I've been kind of wondering about Post-Moogles on the First as well. As in how they even came to be established; not so much the concept of mail delivery, but using Moogles to accomplish it.

The Post-Moogle system on the Source is specifically due to the Seventh Calamity, when aetheric disturbances all over the place meant aetheric communications were messed up, so the Seedseers of Gridania asked the Moogles of the Twelveswood to help out, and paid them in kupo nuts. So technically the Post-Moogles of the Source are in actual employment, with the Seedseers as their employers.

Who employs the Post-Moogles of the First? The Crystarium? Eulmore? Or some long-Flooded nation whose responsibilities the Crystarium or Eulmore picked up, since Post-Moogles were so convenient? And what was the trigger for the formation of the Post-Moogles?

I'm probably liable to agree with you that it's probably one of those gameplay things that you shouldn't really overthink too much, but, it's possible that this might also have been an innovation that

our-old-friend-moonlighting-as-the-Crystal-Exatch set up when the Crystarium was founded (remember, G'raha Tia was from our own time originally, so he would know about the Moogle Delivery Service on the post-7th Calamity Source, and so would have had a 100-year-or-so-head-start), and presumedly set it up for the same reasons it was set up in Eorzea on the Source as the situation in Norvrandt is very similar, if not worse than what Eorzea had to experience after the Battle of Carteneau and Bahamut's rampage. Post 7th Calamity Eorzea simply had to deal with destroyed aetheryte and linkshell networks and the occassional feral animal or monster on the roads, post-Flood-of-Light Norvrandt has it even worse with the Sin Eaters making living outside G'raha Tia's protective Allagan-tech-barriers of the Crystarium almost impossible, so such a form of communication would be even more valuable.

After all, he is already using former Allagan technology in the Crystarium's weapons and defense systems, and also passing on Eorzean items found inside the Crystal Tower to the population for their own use (like Allagan tomestones), so copying the Eorzean moogle mail service would only fit well with that.

Although there is no proof for that, it's an interesting theory either way. ;)
