The final DRK quest journal entry
Was anyone else blown away by this? Not just the easter egg of "reading it as a DRK vs. a non-DRK" but by the implications carried therein? I saw an interpretation of it that comes to the conclusion that the letter given to us that started the quest
wasn't written by the merchant, but was instead written by us, and "Fray"'s comments in the journal
certainly seem to support this.
What was everyone else's reaction to this?
Brief synopsis of what I'm talking about for people who haven't done it yet:
Basically, when you read the final journal entry for the level 80 DRK quest (quest name "Our Closure") the second paragraph says:
"But if you're reading this, then you know how the story goes, don't you? So now comes the choice; hold the crystal close that we may enjoy these moments together. Or put it away and pretend I was never a part of it. That I was never really here."
...which is basically saying that if you read the journal as a DRK you'll get to "enjoy these moments together" with Fray, and if you choose not to "hold the crystal close" by being on another job then you get a fairly generic quest journal entry. But if you choose to read it as a DRK, several extra paragraphs of text are added, commentary from Fray about your past experiences together.
The interpretation I read that makes the most sense to me is that this is essentially
a final goodbye, as we at last understand and have embraced our inner darkness and no longer need the "crutch" that was "Fray." The letter given to us was written by us because we are us in terms of the duality of our conscious selves and our dark side. Support given for this compares the final extra paragraph with the text of the letter, and makes a compelling argument about the similarity in the writing style, coupled with comments in an extra paragraph about Gundobald. The letter and the final paragraph even end with the exam same words, "Be well."
