Confusion regarding the spell Despair for BLM.

I would be really be appreciate for any experienced BLM's that could shed some light on this spell. I think I understand how it works in that you cast it as the last spell in your Astral Fire rotation and that the aspect trait works in conjunction with it so you can get back into Umbral Ice due to the MP cost for the opposite element being reduced to zero.


I'm noticing that every time I cast Fire IV it's reducing the Mana cost on Despair by 800 MP per cast making it so you have the mana at the end of your rotation to be able to get it off. My confusion stems from the fact that no where in any of the spells or traits BLM's have does it state Fire IV reduces the mana cost of despair.


Is this a error in the tooltips or am I missing something?

It just uses "All" MP, so I guess it's just changing the cost of the spell based on how much MP you have remaining, which itself will naturally get lower when you cast Fire 4.

I'm not in expansion, but, I'm assuming, since the spell requires "All" MP, the cost is largely irrelevant, beyond the 800 minimum needed. It's less that the cost is reduced, and more that you just have less of "All" to pay. Whether you have 800 or 10000, it'll cost the same, All.

Yes like others have said, the cost of it is all, so the tooltip will change as your mp drops. It does however have a minimum mp cost. Flare does the same thing btw, incase you didn't already know.

Despair 800 mp at the lowest.

• (=<) 2399 = Despair

• (=) 2400-3999 = Fire/IV then Despair

• (>=) 4000 = 2 Fire/IV then Despair

Another way to rephrase it is tack "Remaining" onto the end of "All." So it uses all remaining mp provided you have the minimum amount of 800, leaving you at 0 MP after it's cast.
