MCH Question

I started playing around with MCH the other day and find it to be fun, but have seen a lot of gloomy post about them but was curious will I be able to get into a raid with this job?

I personally see no issues. As long as you are good and competent at it, groups should take you. That being said, Bard is more desirable because they have more utility. MCH might be the stronger of the two, but they offer no utility besides the shared role actions. MCH is one of the jobs expected to get an overhaul in 5.0 though, so we'll see how things go from there.

i wont call it gloomy but MCH seems to be labeled as support class with BRD as your rival (and in the future, dancer). and in term of support many people seems to choose BRD because it offer more support than MCH. and there is also these "atmosphere" that MCH seems to be "left behind" compare to other class, not totally ignore by dev, it just... "its here for the sake of variety" kind of feeling. because of this, MCH is like a class who rarely get spotlight.

if you dont mind with being a class that give you some sort of "that guy who always in the corner and rarely get called or noticed" feeling. then by all mean, play it. MCH is undoubtedly a fun class, personally i found MCH is easier than BRD because BRD is very "busy" class (a lot of things to look at)

for DF raid, nobody care so you shouldn't have any problem with it. for high end raid however i cant say because iam not into it, but if they have competent/solid BRD in their group, there might be a chance that they will decline you iam afraid.

Played both MCH and BRD and BRD feels more complete. Everything about BRD flows and it has so many tools to buff the party.

-Esuna on 45 cooldown
-AoE -10% physical or magic vuln, or 15% max HP for 30sec
-Buff target's amount of healing received
-2% fulltime crit buff. Given that this should always be active, it's effectively better than Battle Litany's 20s of 15% (which is functionally equivalent to fulltime 1.6% crit bonus)
-15% DH buff

By comparison, MCH has...
-A 120s cooldown that lasts 20s that puts 5% vuln on the target.
-Debuff that reduces target's damge by 10% for 5s
-That's it?
-Oh, also a really aggravating rotation that doesn't feel good or fun to play, even when played as intended.

Functionally, MCH should be the inverse of BRD. Debuff the target, increasing everyone's effectiveness. But they don't really have much....

Traditionally. That's what DNC did. And with DNC being released in ShB, they might do just that. So MCH might keep its powerhouse status, but be more engaging and fun.

I play MCH a lot as my choice of DPS but to name a few that annoy me would be the rng combos, the bullet system, and the level sync problem.
having cooldown to keep the bar from overheating while having the guass round in between skills feels good to me but when you get level synced you start to find managing the bar from over heating is a big problem.

I could forgive most of the problems with the other skill if just those skills could get reworked in a way

You also forgot Foe's on bard so thats another raidwide damage up for them.

One of the main issues with mch comes to optimisation, if you're trying to maximise your damage, you need to stay perfectly lined up with the trick window on your wildfires, which sometimes is just hard to do due to mechanic downtime, or having to move. Also ping affects the class horribly, so you can lose out of damage through genuinely no fault of your own.

With the fact they're adding dancer, another support heavy class, I'm imagining MCH will become the BLM/SAM of the ranged classes next expac.

Machinist is a case of stockhom syndrome.

You'll come to love it through its faults currently.

I raided this whole expansion as a machinist. The job performs just fine and *can* be more consistent than bard given bard’s core kit relies on its dots critting. Nothing feels better than getting a lot of Pitch procs in your opener and nothing feels worse when you barely get one. At least with mch, I know I messed up (or got a little lag spike) when I don’t max a wildfire. I’ll follow that up by saying don’t worry about your ping. The dps difference comes down to player consistency more often than the potency of a 5 or 6 gcd overheat.

The jobs perform similarly in personal dps, though raid dps tends to favor bard. Hypercharge just isn’t on par with a constant crit rate buff and Foe’s Requiem, even when SE randomly bumped Hypercharge to 6%. However, Dismantle is an under appreciated skill, in my opinion. 10% damage debuff every minute is very flexible and strong enough to take a tank buster. Great in prog, not so useful when your team has the fight on farm.

Is it worth taking a mch over a bard? Eh, I’d take someone who was more comfortable with their job than a specific one. If you’re trying to gear up before Shadowbringers, play what makes you happy. Both ranged dps can hold their own in a raid.
