new tank, getting used with DG run, but still zero confident with trial

pretty much what the tittle said. currently on DRK.

iam at level 57, basically iam starting to get used with DG run, still not confident with pulling 2-3 mobs at once but, i can try it once in a while (if my party seems "friendly" enough), pulling mobs + defense skill, enemy back toward party, etc.

but when it come to trial, well... a couple of try got me a yell from my party and once i got booted because i perform very poorly (which i admit i guess). in one trial (ramuh) i even got personal whisp from healer that i should just went dps since iam not even doing my role properly.

its really different feeling from DG run, in DG you just run to mobs, aggro everything, pop def skill and well... keep your aggro i guess. in trial it seems i just cant randomly pop my def skill because i need to time it when the boss going for hard hit, which pretty hard for me with 250++ latency, i also need to learn other thing like how to swap tank later on, turn off my tank stance to help dps, and so on.

thankfully (or not) iam just your typical average player, so i dont aim for high end raid and stuff. in fact the reason why i level DRK is because the upcoming shadowbringer seems to be focus on DRK, so i just level it for fun.

as healer main, personally i found this class is even more stressful than healer, i myself has zero leader skill in real life so maybe there is that "factor" too (more of "follower" type of person so maybe that's why i feel at home with being healer)

The confidence will come with practice. Just stick with it and keep trying.

First, I respect you for trying to tank, and for asking for help. That's the first step to getting better.

I would absolutely do a search for "Balance discord FFXIV", you can sign up for the Tank role and DRK specifically. Essentially, you want to do a duty in Tank stance for the first time you tank something as the active tank. If not, just be the off tank and be ready with provoke if necessary. I would watch a video of the encounter first, to get an idea for mechanics that are important, or positioning ideas for the boss.

You eventually want to get to the point where you don't need tank stance any longer.

For DRK if you have specific issues like aggro, mitigation (dying) or dps, you should highlight them for us so we can give specific guidance. The Balance discord has a FANTASTIC guide by Emiin Vanih of Lamia server. Should hit it up.

Your job wont really come together until you hit 70. Being level 57 you're no more than a paladin the off-white.
As for your strategies, for levelling content, dungeons ans such, sounds like you're doing fine. For trials it's hard to know where you went wrong.

Not sure why you were doing Ramuh but if you were level synced it's not something I'd call an easy fight on any role in there. But also being an older fight you're expected to know the mechanics. This is true for any role, though, not just tank. The difference here is tank mess ups are noticable while DPS aren't always.
Part of being a tank is bearing through the process and learning from your mistakes.

There is no solid advice I can give you at this time other than reach level cap first. The feel of your job will start making more sense and will flow a lot nicer.

I would just like to point that most boss hard hitting attack, especially on normal trial, have a very long casting time (3~5sec) so your 250ms shouldn't be an issue at all.

Perhaps you could modify your UI to put your target cast bar at the center of the screen at 200%
I mean, this way you just can't miss it.

Dark is known for being one of the squishier tanks in the lower levels, since we only start to come into our own from 60 onward, and is the hardest of the 3 to learn. Level 50 trials suck for all 3 though, as we loose half of our toolkit when level synched down to that content. My only advise is to make sure your keeping up with upgrading your gear, there's a sudden spike in damage dealt out from dungeon mobs at 58 onward, and tanks really see big jumps in gains from level 58 gear onward too.

DRK is the squishiest tank in lower level content under 70. Plus the learning curve is higher than the other tanks in terms of just tanking due to the kit.

But like all jobs it takes practice. I recommend doing trial roulette. And communicating with the other tank and letting people know you are new to tanking. This makes people more accepting if you mess up.

Practice, Practice , practice and eventually practice will make perfect or damn near close to being perfect. At least that worked for me.
