Thoughts on what this "secret project" that Yoshi P is working on can be? New MMO?

Recently, Yoshi P has stated that he is working on a secret project, what this project is, nobody outside SE really knows? But when we look at the grand scheme of things, it could just very well be that he's working on a single player RPG like FF7:R.

BUT, that's too boring of a conversation. I think we're bored to death with the eventual(?) release of said game.

FF11 is edging towards its end of life. I was surprised to hear last year that new content would be made but I think this is the last batch of updates before they stop adding new content. I don't know enough about FF11 since I have never played it but who knows what they will do? Is it similar enough for it to be bridged with 14?

Then there is also FF14 6.0 and beyond. Where does that lead? In a more recent interview, while I don't have it on hand, Yoshi was saying that they are thinking about what happens for 6.0 and beyond. Do they add a new graphics engine or do they make due with what they have? What about the next FF MMORPG? There is a lot to consider so perhaps this new secret project may in fact be the next FF MMO?

11 is coming to a close sooner than later. 14 is gaining momentum but it is also a dinosaur. People who got far in 11 might not want to switch to 14 without some kind of incentive. Same with those of us playing 14, how do we go from 14 to 16(?).

I don't know what secret project they are working on, and maybe there will be a bridge that crosses over from 11 to 14 to the next mmo if there is one. For all we know, this secret project could just be a FF7:R or another SE game entirely. Whatever it is, I'm sure it's going to be great and "I look forward to it" :)

FFXI Mobile is still in development, surprisingly. That game will probably outlive FFXIV at this point.

FFXI has content planned for the 20th anniversary in a few years. It's not dying because no game can replace the type of gameplay it offers, including this one. I still go back to FFXI every so often to have MMO fun and I don't feel like this one.

I don't think the project is another FF MMO. They have two active ones and I doubt they want three running at the same time.

I would guess it's another IP honestly.

I highly doubt that it's a new MMO. If I were to guess it's another FF title or maybe another title entirely.

It's a new "Core title" according to the announcement, and coincidentally he was talking about what he'd theoretically do if he happened to get the chance to direct XVI as recently as the last few FanFests. Yosuke Saito also said in the recent past that he'd like to be a permanent part of the XIV team and work his way up to producer, and now he's coincidentally a guest creator for the Automata raids.

It's all a complete coincidence I'm sure.

I hope it's a new MMO!...


FFXI will not live forever and by the time the new game was finished it would be time to put it to rest, I think it works great this way and Square Enix will definitely continue to make new games and there's nothing better than a new Final Fantasy Online!...


I like FFXIV but time has left it behind looking really outdated and I want a new adventure to replace it as soon as possible!...

High fantasy Final Fantasy is the only thought I have, given that he said he'd like to make something like that. That's hype, my favorite FF game (there are many I love) is probably FF9.. just came together for me (music, environments, game systems, mini-games).

MMOs take so long to make, and require such a large amount of money, that no companies outside of China and Korea are willing to invest in something with no guaranteed RoI. I'm not even sure if the Chinese/Korean MMO mill still exists outside of mobile.

There's a reason that the most successful MMOs at present are as old as they are. ESO is probably the most recent, and it came out in 2014.

It's not outside the realm of possibility that they're looking towards the wrapping up of the FFXIV storyline over the next 4 years or so. He did mention once that they had plans for 10 years and we're on year 6 already. And while I seriously adore FFXIV quite a bit, and am in no particular rush to replace it, I would not be averse to something new either. Especially something on par with FFXV in terms of graphics. I imagine a new MMO would also allow them the chance to build the code properly from the ground up and fix a lot of the inherent problems we have with the current stuff.

I don't envy Yoshi-P his exhaustion if that's the case though. That poor man looks like he needs a 10 year nap as it is. Either way, we'll find out what insanity he's cooking up next eventually lol!

I don't think XIV is dwindling anywhere near as much as it would need to for them to consider a new MMO, they wouldn't want to cannibalize subscriptions like that quite yet.
