Do vegans IRL eat non-vegan food in FF XIV?

Honest question. If someone identifies as a vegetarian/vegan in real life, would they refuse to eat animal products in XIV too? Would they be able to level culinarian at all? What about gear that appears to be made out of leather?

I ask because I have a vegan friend I'm trying to recruit to the game and wasn't sure if this would be an issue for them.

My opinion is this:

If someone can't separate fantasy from reality then I really don't know what to tell them. One is not like the other. I'm not a vegan in real life and I eat in real life...but I hardly ever eat in FF XIV.

In Role Play they might avoid meat dishes; but in Final Fantasy, they do not have a choice. When your best raid food has meat in it, are you really going to go to a lesser dish to avoid fictional meat? That would be ridiculous.

Vegans don't have to worry. They have lalas to feed on.

I am not a vegan, but I know the point of veganism is not using anything that was made by animal suffering (I won't say anything more about THAT because... yeah). As long as they're not hardcore-rp'ing their veganism there should be no problem since no actual animals are being harmed, only a bunch of data in the shape of one. Whether that counts as supporting animal cruelty or something, I don't know...

Whatever. Veganism is in general a protest against livestock farming. But there are no real animals in FF14, so no animals come to harm. The meat is just pixels, like everything else here. When your friend has a problem with "eating" pixel meat, then what would he do when he has to kill some animals for a quest? Or people? Well, I guess it's okay to kill the animals, since you hunt them down in the wild instead of putting them into a tiny box where they have to live their entire life under horrible conditions...

Do you guys remember the quest where you had to kill some Chocobos? :O

I imagine it could be said something like as a male do you refuse to play a female, or a female play a male, or if you're not a killer do you mind playing as a hitman in... Hitman?

They should, probably, be okay :3. Just don't show them the shark-fin soup :P.

But you need to eat to do big damage.

I’m vegan, have been for eight years. The ethical position of veganism is to avoid harming, killing or otherwise exploiting animals for human purposes. There are no real animals in ff14. Only code. Therefore no animals are being harmed.

Honestly, if they really manage to have issue with it, then killing all the digital animals is probably the bigger concern.

But they shouldn’t. Because it’s just code.
