Debate, idea, philosophy, system : The Choices of the Sultane (spoil)

I m on a certain step about the story, at a moment where Nanamo announce a major decision.

I dont know what will happen next , but the purpose here is to discuss about the different choice that Nanamo could use, and which system Uldah could go for it for a better futur. I find this interesting, cause the game introduc some major political notion, and maybe some developer would like us to think about or discuss.

Anyway those who want to speak, feel free to do it,i will expose several point, and i ll be glad to receive your view.

decision to take about Tediliji

This plot show several thing about the sultan power and situation. As a wise and clever ruler she doesnt want to take hasty decision or brutal one cause she think that the political consequence would be heavy. Not many ruler have this kind of approach about an issues or a threat, often they go ahead as unbrain guy.

But for this plot, i would rather to suggest to Nanamo to arrest and put in jail Tediliji, he is not so much supported and consequence wouldnt be hard. Also the "Saudi's" way to take off his head, like we could saw in some recent plot in the Kingdom of Arabia. But Nanamo is more virtue ruler.

For the Sultane, to have more influent at the court, i think she could build a spy network in the whole city and kingdom, create a special military corps who obey only to her. Try to gather on her side administrator and influent person among the people. This would make her power more balanced than now, and able to make accept her decision.

About to do Uldah as republic.

If we can discuss the idea on this system, which is the favorit for the upper class and will make thing easyer for monetary guy in Ul Dah, maybe the way to think it is to be close of the Venice one model. Venice was a city of merchant, and also a republic with a modern system.

In Venice, to balance with the power, people had to build themselve as corporation. Like this, all classe of the city can defend his interest, for exemple companies need worker to make benefit, and worker need to claim to companies good condition for work. In that way, every part of the population defend his own interest and everyone is winner, however it make a society very individual but can be fine if people accept it.
So the best for Uldah to be a more fair city for its people, is to try follow Venice model.

She has a force that answers to her though it's the Sultansworn aka all the plds and she has a very influential person by her side and maybe two as Papashan is very well respected. Also I'm pretty sure they explain why they can't go and arrest Tedliji and I'm sure she does have other informants. I mean she goes incognito enough to get a feeling of how most of Ul'Dah thinks and feels about how things are. Along with how to try and help the refugees.

I dont doubt of it, but from my analyse, i dont see what Tediliji could do to threat her, and silver helmet are not necessary on her side, just some important guy, i dont see them like a real force that she could rely on.

Why put Tediliji in jail or behead him when he can accidentally fall down some stairs and break his neck?

The Sultansworn are her personal guard and they have their own network of info gathers along with Raubahn who is the person I didn't name who's very influential. Tedilji has a long reach and a lot of coin and enough blackmail on people that sticking any kind of charges and him seeing punishment is very unlikely. Heck if I remember right he's responsible greatly as to why there's so much corruption in the Brass Blades. The only other person I'd be alright with saying was in her corner that's part of the "board" would be Godbert as he's like the only other not slimy and decent person on there besides Nanamo and Rauhbahn. Papashan is on her side as he's one of the few who will keep her alias a secret and is the Ex-Commander of the Sultansworn. I'd say that there's one more person on her side but until you get past the reason why you have to go to Ishgard I won't name them.

I really wish I could give you a more detailed response Kazhim but I absolutely do not want to spoil any of the MSQ story for you. I will mention though that in addition to you going much further with the story, you can also find time later on to do the Paladin quests which help to further explain the Sultansworn, the Syndicate and the politics of Ul'Dah.

Firstly, welcome to Eorzea! :D

As Ramsses said, keep playing as a lot happens in this regard that we do not wish to spoil for you. I will however explain a little about Ul'dah's unique political structure and why it has come about.

Officially, as you know Ul'dah is a Sultanate, a monarchy with a Sultan as it's head of state ruled by the Ul dynasty for hundreds of years (except for that brief time the citystate was ruled by the pretender Thorne dynasty). However, Ul'dah became very wealthy as a centre of trade in Eorzea, and thus the merchants, traders and moneymen and women who increasingly settled in the city became extremely influential politically, gradually eroding the Sultan's political power. The end result of this was the formation of the Syndicate, a political entity of the six wealthiest and most powerful merchants and businessmen and women in the city, who hold the real power behind the throne, reducing the Sultana's position to little more than a figurehead; a compliant rubber stamp on policy and law, effectively turning the Sultanate into an oligarchial plutocracy.

Connected with the Syndicate is that there are two underlying political ideologies at play in it (essentially political 'parties'). The Monetarists, which represent the merchants and the wealthy, and the Royalists, who support the Sultana and would prefer to restore much of lost political standing. By the time of ARR, only Nanamo and Raubahn are Royalists, everyone else on the Syndicate are either outright Monetarists (like Teledji-Adeldji) or at the very least politically neutral (or try to present an air of being affiliated with the Monetarists but secretly are neutral, Lolorito is an example of this). Hence politics in Ul'dah is pretty much a tug of war between the Monetarists and the Royalists for control, sadly the Monetarists are the ones who usually win.

And their reach extends beyond politics into both the military and law enforcement too - the Sultansworn are estensibly the royal guard of the Sultana but many are in the pockets of the Monetarists, hedging their bets as to who is going to come out on top when the ailing system eventually collapses under it's own weight. And until the Immortal Flames were formed in the lead up to the Calamity, Ul'dah lacked a regular standing army, it instead employed mercenaries to serve, and the individual Syndicate members themselves have their own private armies that instead fill Ul'dah's law enforcement and security roles - the Brass Blades being an example of this.

The situation is further worsened by the fact (known by pretty much everyone in Ul'dah, including Nanamo herself), is that she is the last of her line, when she dies, the Ul dynasty literally dies with her. This is the reason for Nanamo's decision to replace both the Syndicate and the monarchy with a democratic republic, as she feels it's the best model for transitioning power relatively peacefully. Teledji of course, wants that power for himself and Lolorito, stands to lose as much as he would gain if either results came about, so he has a more vested interest in maintaining the status quo, keeping the Syndicate's power intact with Nanamo retained as Sultana (albeit as a relative figurehead that he pays lip service to).

There is much more that happens at the end of ARR and in the Heavensward expansion, but I will not spoil it for you. Just keep playing and see for yourself! :D

I will add for the lore forums most spoilers are only hidden under tags for the first few weeks after a patch, although we try to avoid any spoilers in titles at all. After that point more obscure spoilers may or may not be tagged, but basically everything in the main scenario, raid side quests, job and class quests is no longer tagged. Given where you are in the story probably every active thread in Lore is a spoiler for you. However, this and your last few threads I've seen are more inline with the Lore forum than what is normally is discussed in General.
