Getting minor lag spikes. Is lag very common in this game?

So I just started out this game with my girlfriend, and we both find it very enjoyable.
However, I can't stop noticing a feeling of minor lag when I attack enemies. Like when the hit animation from an arrow hits, then it takes around half a second to a complete second to register it.

Also sometimes, or very often, on my screen my GF is very far behind me, while when I look at her screen she is in front of me while walking or running.

We are both from EU, have selected the EU server Odin. Neither of us are using a VPN (I've read the game really hates that).

So, is this just common or is there something wrong?

We are both playing on PC, having a very good internet connection, and both are PC's can run the game just fine. While minor rubberbanding is common in online games, I haven't noticed it being this heavy in World of Warcraft or other MMORPGS we've enjoyed together.

That all sounds like network related problems. In particular it sounds like the results of network latency.

What can I do? It's the only online game I have problems with.

So I first want to say the game doesn't hate VPNs, for some unfortunate players it's almost a requirement. But maybe you heard "hate" because FF does have a very aggressive security system - if you aren't using one time passwords, you could get locked out of your account if you try to use one.

That said from your description I'm not sure it's network latency. For this game it's normal for there to be a bit of a delay between when you do an attack and when it registered - this is animation delay, however. But for those coming from other titles where it's instant, it can take some getting used to.

For the movement system, this is also normal. Any time you see yourself running abreast with someone, they're going to see you running behind them. Most people don't notice because they aren't playing side by side with someone. It can be a thing in raiding though - "if you see yourself as with the group, you're actually behind and moved too late" sort of thing.

If you do have latency issues it could make the above worse, but just from what you've described, that alone doesn't necessarily mean you have latency problems.

I noticed lag last night at prime time while seiryu farming had three other party members like me from Phoenix also experiencing lag one of them disconnected in the middle of the fight (bye bye lb3). I assume it is mostly a problem with the Chaos Data Centre during prime time. Any other people from chaos data centre experiencing lag too?

When I kill something, it takes around one second before the chat says I gained XP, and before the counter goes up in a quest (etc. killed x/y mobs).

Is this normal, or is there something wrong?

I don't know if this says anything, but I often noticved I have around 500 packages send and 3000 received.

Notice I'm getting bad lag spikes and random disconnects again since last Friday. I'm thinking they might be from bad snow storms that western US got.

I'd be surprised if that was causing problems; pretty sure the data centers are down in California, and the bad snow storms have been up here in Washington, not down there. Even the Portland area hasn't been hit as badly as we are.

OP's on Chaos anyways, and that data center has had problems with lag throughout 4.0 from what I've heard. It's probably part of the reason why they're splitting it up.

So it's something they are working on? Got any ETA? And yeah the snowstorm in the US shouldn't affect EU data servers.

BTW another question is this game very active and getting enough new content that justifies the sub?
