An unexpected error has occurred. Exiting Final Fantasy XIV. (XAudio2_7.dll, etc.)

I've been getting the same kinds of crashes some other people have since 4.5:

• ffxiv_dx11.dll crashes, but those have gone away
• nvwgf2umx.dll "crashes" but those don't seem to crash the game fully, just pop up the window. I can click past it and play the game as normal as long as I don't hit "OK", although normally XAudio2_7.dll isn't too far after.
• XAudio2_7.dll is the main issue and completely freezes the game.

They seem to occur mainly only in Orbonne Monastery (most prominent in the last 2 bosses) and very infrequently in Rhalgar's Reach. In Orbonne, it seems like once I'm in the last 2 bosses the crashes can be between 1 minute and 20 minutes depending on the day.

I'm trying to avoid attempting a full OS re-install as much as I can, so I figured I would post in here and see if there was anything I was missing that anyone could think of.

I've tried basically everything anyone has suggested to me or on a post I can find (in approximately the order tried):

• Updated graphics drivers
• Tried an earlier graphics driver (got rid of nvwgf2umx.dll-based crashes, but still had XAudio2_7.dll crashes)
• Full re-install graphics and sound drivers
• Turned down graphics to Standard (Laptop)
• Windows 7 compatibility mode
• Windows 8 compatibility mode
• Ran on DX9 and DX11
• Reinstalling FFXIV
• Deleting the contents of "Documents/My Games/Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn"
• Ran DirectX redist
• Ran dxdiag (showed no errors)
• Ran graphics card memory tests and stress tests, none showed any issues
• Recorded computer temperatures during raid. GPU maxed out at 83C. CPU at 81C.
• Recorded GPU available VRAM, didn't drop below 800MB free
• Made sure BIOS was not overclocking at all
• Windows 10 repair install

Good afternoon and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

The "XAudio2_7.dll" crash indicates an audio-related crash. Since you were also getting a "nvwgf2umx.dll" error message (relating to Nvidia graphics drivers), it may have something to do with the Nvidia audio drivers. These drivers are used to send audio through the HDMI of the graphics card (if you have the PC connected to a TV or monitor with speakers). When you updated (or reverted) the graphics drivers did you reinstall these as well, or perhaps do a clean install of everything?

Do you have any other speaker or headphones connected to the PC? Do you have a PS4 controller connected? Since the PS4 controller has a headphone jack, it can be incorrectly read by the PC as an audio device.

You may also want to try a clean boot if you haven't done so already. Simply open the task manager and select the 'Start up' tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC.

Hi Einmimiria, I appreciate the quick response!

I've disabled the "Nvidia High Definition Audio" device in my sound devices list, although I'm unsure if that actually would prevent that device from affecting the game. I'm pretty sure it was updated/downgraded and uninstalled along with my graphics driver every time as the Installed On date is the same as my "Nvidia Graphics Driver" listing. My PS4 controller has been unplugged from my computer for the past few months, so I doubt that would be the issue.

I will try a clean boot next time I run and will let you know the result.

I did not crash on my latest Orbonne run after a clean boot. Looks like that will be my temporary fix for the time being until I figure out what the issue is.

This is a bug in FFXIV on how it handles xaudio 2.7 API when audio driver switches. I've tried putting in a few bug reports for this but they refuse to accept it as a bug because it is "outside" the game.
