About Rook Overdrive...

Very recently I got into MCH and I don't consider myself good or anything and I'm looking to improve, which is why I'm opening this thread.

Yesterday we were chatting about random stuff on FC chat and then we started talking about MCHs. I ranted about how Rook Overdrive sucks and is a DPS loss and then the FC responded by laughing while claiming that it is awesome and a DPS gain if I use it correctly in the opener which caught me a little off guard tbh. I didn't ask the details of when I should use it because it seemed pretty obvious. It should be used any time during Hypercharge right? Because Rook damage isn't affected by Overheat and doesn't accumulate in Wildfire so it's not necessary to squeeze it inside Wildfire... right? I beat up the dummy multiple times with and without Rook Overdrive and every single time I did less DPS with Rook Overdrive than without Rook Overdrive. Am I missing something here? Or have I been trolled?

Generally speaking, all the raid buffs are active during the opener window.

Rook Overdive is equivalent to 10 attacks front loaded. This means in isolation, Rook Overdrive is ten turret auto attacks (About what you lose for the 30 second downtime).

However, during the opener, you have every single raid buff going. Trick attack, hyperdrive, brotherhood, etc.

So it's 800 potency x all multipliers, which is more than you would get with 10 auto attacks over 30 seconds. It will also be a large DPS gain if you do so before an invulnerability window.

And if you roll a DCrit, it's like having 10 full DCrits.

So is it only viable during the opener and before boss invulnerability?

Given the way timers work out, it will always be available during 120 second buff windows. As long as you don't forget to resummon it, it is at worst neutral, but as long as at least one notable buff is up, it's always a gain.

If you keep Rook Overdrive aligned properly with other raid buffs in a meta comp, you will use it at about every 2 minutes. That means at about 0:20, 2:20, 4:20, 6:20, etc. of every zero downtime fight. Meta comp includes DRG, NIN, SCH. Having a BRD and AST helps out your DPS too. If you have a Ninja, Rook Overload will hit right after the last charged auto-attack from the Turret and before Trick Attack's 10 seconds wears off .

Every 0:20 and 6:20, will be your biggest burst with Rook Overdrive. You have Battle Litany and possibly Dragon Sight buffs (but most DRG will give to BRD or melee DPS/WAR), Chain Strategem, and Trick Attack. If you have BRD, you get Battle Voice and possible Foe's Requiem.
Every 2:20 and 4:20, will be moderate burst with Rook Overdrive. Same as above except no Battle Litany nor Battle Voice.

General idea is to always use your strongest cooldowns and moves during buff windows.

Do party buffs actually affect Overdrive? It's easy to understand that debuffs on the target would affect the damage, but I don't think most party buffs hit the turret (or do they? For some reason I was thinking they didn't), and I was under the assumption that the damage was coming from the turret, not the player.

I think the basic rule of thumb is to use it with Hypercharge and to keep them lined up. There are of course situations (such as fight transitions) where it's a dps gain to blow it up early since you'll have the downtime to get it back up after reset debuff.

Fairly certain everything but Dragon Sight affects turret damage so I'd assume the same for Overload but tbh not sure, good question.

before a downtine is always a win too. (not necearlly better than on the opener but still, if you're unsure)
You have downtime on Chaos before orb and wind jump (by altough windjump is a very minor downtime)
Mygdra has plenty of downtime with add phase transition, after the tailburn thingy too.
OS11 has 2 downtime, one before TV and one at the end of TV, however I would personally not waste that on the TV...
OS12 has a few downtime during the goo split and electric slides.

You can also do it if you see you've just failed a mechanic and are about to die :p
Considering the time for you to be rezzed, resummon turret (which will deal 25% less dmg), that's definitely a win
