Xaela and language

Riffing off a couple of posts below: the original Encyclopedia Eorzea notes that on the Steppe, most Xaela still speak their ancestral language. We get hints of it with the occaasional Mongolian words and names in Stormblood, but at no point is there any indication of an actual language barrier. Obviously the Warrior of Light has the Echo, and you'd expect the non-Qesteri Xaela in Reunion to speak the common tongue, but there's several Mol children are able to converse with Lyse with no trouble, and Gosetsu certainly makes his opinions of Dotharl customs clear. How, exactly, does that work?

On a related question: does the Echo transmit accents? Would a Steppe-born WoL have an accent when speaking in Eorzean?

It's either an oversight or the common tongue is just a lot more...common then one might think.

Considering that even most of the beast tribes bother to learn it (Enough so that it's the main criteria the Garleans use for distinguishing them from simple beasts, which puts tribes like the Matanga who are physically inept at speaking it in a sour spot), the notion of it being widespread among the more civilized Xaela doesn't seem too far-fetched.

I seem to recall that they lampshade that Lyse, Tataru and the twins can all speak "Hingan" a few times in the MSQ (perhaps they learned it from the Doman refugees). So in the steppe I just kinda went with everyone else was using Hingan as a shared language to communicate with. It seemed like a more likely candidate than Eorzean common anyways. Honestly I don't think we are suppose to think too hard about it ala "how long has it been since ARR?" and "do our party members actually exist in xyz dungeon/trial?".

The only thing I recall in regards to the Scions speaking Hingan is Alisaie making a sarcastic comment in regards to her fluency in the language. Probably around the bit where they're waiting for the obvious trap to be sprung on them.

We clearly know that in Othard they don't speak the common Eorzean tongue, considering Hancock is so eager to share his knowledge of Hingan words and their meanings. And he splashes those words into his Eorzean more than is proper for sure.

As far the WoL goes, it's pretty much a given that we have the Echo power to transcend words. If I recall this was played with more in 1.x where the beast tribes didn't speak Eorzean common and your ability to understand them wasn't common.

Both true, and false.

This is a difference in localization, since everyone speaks Japanese if your settings are put to Japanese.

In terms of lore, it's not entirely confirmed, since it's both mentioned as a "dialect" and a different language. You also have the ancient language in the lore, which is supposed to be a different language all together.

Buth otherwise, everyone there seems to be speaking a common language, it just that some words sounds "funny" because it's a dialect.

That one weird Raen quote from the first lore book about dialects I think is just worded poorly. The second lore book clarifies that while most modern languages are descended from an ancient Allagan language, that Hingan and Eorzean are entirely different languages. But when western traders made their way to the Far East, the "Common Tongue" ended up catching on there and quickly spread. The bit about it being a strange dialect is likely just that - many Domans and Hingans can speak Eorzean Common, but because of differences in localization in the Far East, and the continued use of several Hingan phrases, it comes off as an odd dialect.

I've compiled all the language lore I could find in this post on Languages and Accents. All of the new EE2 language lore is there, as well as pictures of the new Far Eastern script.

But the Koji and Oda also states that Doman and Hingan are different languages to Eorzean, but to quote another user; "Koji and Oda both acknowledge that due to the Japanese version obviously already speaking Japanese in all regions it's hard to equate Hingan/Doman to being "Japanese" specifically, however for simplicity's sake it would essentially be a different language altogether."

But I like, and prefer your compilation of language better. So I guess you can count it as another language overall.
