There has been a number of times when for one reason or another a healer or a tank was unable to finish a run and it leaves the rest in a bind. So often i would love to be able to switch from dps to healer since DPS is much easier to replace and then we can just finish out our run. Same goes for people who have tank alts. But we cant. We are trapped in those rolls until its done and classes like healers or tanks which are harder to find at times become our purgatory as we wait for one to show up.
There is much that all MMO's can learn from each other and one very useful ability is the ability to change your class before filling in that empty slot. Some active it with the ability to leave the dungeon, without dropping participation, to switch class and then reenter. That is also another useful ability to leave the dungeon to say make room in ones bags and come back. Or we can just be allowed, while not in combat, to switch our role from say from DPS to healer, so long as there is not already a healer registered at that time, so that we can continue our dungeon run without too much disruption.
This is a change that would help out alot and i think SE should seriously consider it.

I think as long as there is not loot in the pool (so you couldn't need on everything) and you are not in combat you should be able to change in a dungeon regardless of whether or not the role is already filled. Sometimes, for instance, in 8 man content 2 tanks or heals are not needed, so ppl should be able to switch if they want to.
You could in v1 and in some instances it was almost mandatory. I think in AV you would down the first boss with melee and last with mages or something like that if you wanted speed run kills which were mandatory for darklight gear which was bis iirc. Yoshida gave us a reason about why it was changed but idr what that reason was. Regardless its just one of FFXIV's many many many needless restrictions. -

Just to make sure that in situations where we loose a healer or tank which are often harder to replace in a timely fashion that someone in the group could switch class to fill in that role before we seek out replacement and then can just wait for dps which often is available very quickly. -

To be fair the issue varies in many ways based on time of day, datacentre, current popularity of roles etc. Maybe if there were more healer and tank jobs perhaps queuing wouldn't be such a problem for DPS. I wouldn't mind being able to switch between jobs in the same role (e.g. PLD to WAR) but to a different role, I'm not sure it would work as well as we'd like it to.
I think the best way to do it is that SE allows us to send out invitations to players if there is someone in particular that can fill a missing role. So let's say the tank leaves but I know someone who is happy to jump in, I send them an invite and they get brought straight in to it without having to do the whole Join Party in Progress through the DF. Of course parties can still recruit through the normal refill option but I think the invitations thing could help a lot. -
