Proto-Ultima in Dun Scaith+ a question about the mhachi raids

Not too long ago I decided to do some old dungeon/raid clean up and finished the Mhachi 24-man raids.

Then on the final one in Dun Scaith I encountered something that confused me.....a boss fight with what seems to be a prototype of the Ultima Weapon


from what I've looked up Proto-Ultima was a Fanfest exclusive boss at some point but it's usage here made little sense to me

Shouldn't that be in say...the crystal tower where in XIV lore it was an Allagan structure and it would make some sense if that place had a prototype of the Ultima Weapon?

Another question is,what does the three locations for the raids reference?

Cuz for the other 24 man raids the references were more consistent as in ARR the raids are from FF3 while in Stormblood the raids there reference the Ivalice games.

But the mhachi raids seems to pick and choose multiple things from Diabolos from FF8(who btw I just found out he was in Ampador's keep while doing some old dungeon clean up) and Ozma from FF9.

Maybe the Void Arc is a reference to the summon from FF9 but I'm not too sure

Lol Ultima Weapon replaced a fight that happened in that spot and was only put there because we liked it sooo much and did so well on it that as a nice thing they were going to be putting it into the game somewhere. To so many people's reactions of WTFBBQ like yours when we found out where. I'm not really sure the Void Ark areas have much of a nod to any of the past games but more of a hey not everything stupid old or cool is of Allagan tech. Along with a how an entire city ends up being floating chunks with lore dumps of more details in the only other age we have a lot of records on.

So they picked Dun Scaith randomly to put it in.......wow xD

Azys La would've been a more fitting place tbh like....for a hard version of the Aetherochemical Research Facility dungeon or heck the Fractual Continium dungeon

Well what did we have previously, a Succubus boss and a couple of adds which in the end gave the Blood Sword as a reward. I know Proto doesn't exactly fit in to that specific raid, but it's nice to have something a little different. Some players also used it to compete the side quest for accessories so wasn't all bad.

Yeah, a lot of people thought we were going to get the fight like how Odin is a fate and an instance. Nope they were all lets plop the sucker into Dun Scaith outta the blue.

Don't get me wrong it was a nice surprise and I loved the fight....it just the placement felt so random xD.

But hey at least it is better than another encounter with generic succubus monster

It always seemed out of place there. I didn't know it had replaced something else, but that explains a lot.

It would have made more sense as a stand-alone trial.

The fight's kinda overly simplistic for a trial though, by HW standards though. I suppose they could have tuned the fight to make it more challenging, but it would definitely have been the simplest trial in HW (excepting Bismarck, maybe). Dun Scaith is definitely a weird choice, but the fight is so bare-bones it would have been hard to make it standalone.

The Void Ark, Weeping City, and Dun Scaith raids are a bit of an analogue to the Lost City of Amdapor, Amdapor Keep and Wanderer's Palace dungeons. Those dungeons all delve into the different city-states involved in the War of the Magi. However, the city of Mach never got a dungeon around that time. So while we knew what kind of magic Amdapor and and Nym were up too, we really didn't know what the Machi Black Mages were really doing. The HW 24-man raids went over that in detail.

Proto-Ultima couldn't really be put in Azys Lla because there's already another Proto-Ultima type FATE in Azys Lla (Prey Online). It's one of those FATES like Odin, Behemoth and Ixion that don't spawn very often and drop an item you can turn in for the Ultima Horns. I have a really hard time seeing Proto-Ultima be a trial given how few mechanics it has. But that might just be the tuning it has to be a 24-man encounter. Just remember that if it had been it's own trial, SE would have had to develop an instance for it, which costs dev resources. Putting it in a 24-man meant no extra dev resources had to be used.

And as the name implies it wouldn't make much sense to make the prototype stronger than the finished UW(tho even that is easy on Pretorium and only harder on EX)

I didn't know about the FATE in Azys Lla tho
