Hey guys i'm brand new to the game, I just finished the main story line from ARR and i'm wondering : Do I really need to do all of the quest from patches in order to get to Heavensward ? Also, i'm level 56 but since I can't get in heavensward content I can't do any of my new class quest and can't use my level 50+ skills. Is it normal or am I doing something wrong ?

Yes you need to follow the main story and eventually it will lead you to the next expac. The only way you can get around not doing the story is purchasing the story skip items on the Mog Station for real money, but I'd advise to just stick at it for now. It'll get better.
Job abilities past level 50-60 are locked behind quests so until you get access to Heavensward content, unfortunately you can't use any further job actions between those levels. Stormblood is an exception though as you can learn job actions just from leveling up (so 61 I think onwards), but the level 70 action will be locked behind the job quest.
Thank you very much ! I didn't knew if I was doing something wrong. I'll probably start Heavensward at level 60 .. I should have only done main story missions.
Quite a few new players on the preferred worlds with the Road to 60 buff often have that issue. All that bonus exp just keeps you constantly overleveled and the MSQ feels like it's going slower because of it. I would recommend leveling up some other classes/jobs as well along the way, it could keep things a little more exciting and you might decide to give them the quest exp instead.
