Unable to play FFXIV in fullscreen with DirectX 9.0c

I was planning on returning to FFXIV after a long break, but found out that I'm now unable to play on full screen when using DirectX 9.0c. I can only play in borderless windowed, but that eats up extra resources and makes the game very choppy in crowded areas. I was getting a stable 60fps+ in full screen before I took a hiatus, and I would like to have that back.

I've already tried reinstalling FFXIV and my graphics card driver.



When launching FFXIV in DX9.0c, I get this error screen:

I can play the game in full screen when using DX11, but there is noticeable lag with NPCs showing up and things failing to load in dungeons. Additionally, when exiting the game, I get these error screens:

I would really like to subscribe once again, but not having a smooth game is killing my motivation to play. As far as I know, FFXIV is the only game giving out the errors. After doing a bit of googling, others have had this problem after some Windows 10 update a few months back, but none of them had proper fixes for the problem aside from not playing the game in fullscreen.

Please try the following suggestions:



- Disable all programs/overlays running in the background
- Perform a clean boot*
- Set compatibility mode to Windows 7/8**
- Make sure that any anti-virus software they have has the appropriate exceptions
- Install game on C drive (The same drive as the Operating System

*To perform a clean boot for Windows 8/10: Open the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. For Windows 7: Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press Enter to start the System Configuration utility. On the General tab, click the Selective startup option, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all. For Mac: Restart the Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The Apple logo appears on your display. Release the Shift key when you see the login window.

**To change compatibility mode, right click on the exe file (Default location: C:\Program Files (x86)\SquareEnix\Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn\boot\ffxivboot.exe), right click it and select ‘Properties.’ Select the ‘Compatibility’ tab and select an earlier version of Windows (most likely 8 or 7).

- I disabled all programs and overlays, but I have to have the Steam client open as I got the game from their store. It didn't work.
- Disabled all programs under the start up tab of my task manager and rebooted, but that also did not work.
- Compatibility mode set to Windows 8, didn't work. Windows 7 didn't either.
- The FFXIV folder is excluded from scans, and I tried playing with my firewall turned off as well; it didn't work.
- The game is already installed in my C: drive.

Is it possible to start the game in windowed mode, then change to fullscreen and play normally? Or does it crash again when you change that setting?

You may be experiencing more lag because the DirectX 11 mode has some additional visual features. Does turning down some of those settings make any difference?

Try setting your laptop to a high performance mode if you have not already. Additionally, go into the Nvidia Control Panel and find Final Fantasy XIV. You should be able to assign the GPU for the game. Select the 960M if it isn't already.

- Fullscreen is possible only in DX11, but gives a strange error when exiting the game. DX9.0c starts up properly in windowed mode, but going fullscreen immediately crashes the game and causes the 1000003d error to pop up.

- The entire point of this thread was to help me play in 9.0c fullscreen once again. DX11 works in fullscreen, the settings are as low as they can go, but again, the game gives out that strange error when exiting and NPCs have a tendency to go fail loading. Going borderless windowed works perfectly, but performance takes a hit and it’s difficult to keep a constant 60fps especially in crowded areas.

- The laptop is already at high performance. It’s plugged in to a power outlet as well. The 960M is my default graphics card to begin with, and it’s what the DX9 FFXIV is using according to the Nvidia Control Panel.

I’m not even sure I understand the error. All my other games are working just fine. Warframe, GW2, Stellaris, Overwatch, etc.. The fullscreen issues are only happening to FFXIV.

In regards to the error you get while trying to run in DirectX 9 mode, try setting your desktop resolution to something lower than it's native pixel count (such as 900p), then try to launch the game in Fullscreen mode. Does the error still occur? Try using borderless windowed with this lowered resolution and see if this has any affect on the performance.

Just a longshot. Open the launcher, go to config > reset system settings.

I'm going to say it's a Windows thing. The recent Windows update has some issues with games and frame rates. And other stuff on various hardware. Apparently mostly machines with dual graphics. Id post a link but there's literally thousands of them on Google.

You might find full screen works better if you right click go into properties and you should see somewhere near the run as admin and comparability boxes. An option to disable full screen optimization. I got better results doing that but in the end I just went back to Windows 7 till they fix the problems people are having with games in Windows 10.
