Map Marking, {Yes, Please!}

I for one know that minor things like this aren't at the top of the list of what SE is trying to get done at the moment, so I won't waste my time crying about it, I'm just throwing the idea out there.

In FFXI we had markers for our maps for when we wanted to come back to things later, harvesting and mining, and NPC locations. It never really took up space on the game servers because, like macros, the markers we're saved on your personal computer. So why not bring it back?

Sure, they gave us the icons on the map for secondary gathering, and there are sites that show us every place we can go for gathering, but am I the only one getting tired of looking back and forth between the game and a site to see where a specific gathering (primary or secondary) node is?

If we brought back Map Markers, things could be a tab more simpler for those of us who spend most of our time gathering rather than killing. Plus, it'll play into aesthetic detailing because what adventurer doesn't mark their maps while trotting out a path they're unfamiliar with.

I'm all for map marking. Another thing that is kinda related to this is being able to show your party members a location on the map, though it's a bit difficult to implement for gamepad/PS3 users.

I was thinking of coding a quick 'transparent background' text input program that could stay over the screen to sort of act as a method of marking the map because being able to remember locations via notes is key in a game world of this size. Obviously I didn't do this because of the 99 other problems it would cause, but that's how desperate I got at one point.

Map markers with a variety of icons. Not just coloured dots, but stars and other shapes/FFXIV symbols too.

My idea of how a marker would work:
1) pick an icon for the marker;
2) input a title for the marker. Title of markers are ALWAYS displayed on the map. Leave it blank if you don't want text to be displayed on your map;
3) input details about the market. When you click the marker, the details about the marker are displayed. That way you can record your feeling about that particular place, input what things you can find there, etc. You can also leave it blank if you don't want to input details.

The only thing mandatory would be the marker's icon.

4) Allow the marker to show up on the minimap.
