O7S why enforce 2 melee?

There was some nice discussion about how the meteors were placed in O5S in the other thread. Here's another one...

Why are PF groups enforcing 2 MDPS in O7S?

I can completely understand why you would not want 3 MDPS, since one of them has to lose up-time during chakra burst.

What I do not understand is why groups will not allow 3 RDPS when one of the RDPS can simply stand in one of the MDPS positions and do exactly the same DPS as if he was stood in a ranged position. You need 1 MDPS if you plan on using the single-target LB in your strategy. You don't need any if you plan on using the AoE lb, unless you really want that DRG or NIN for the utility. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the mage LB on two targets does more damage than melee lb on a single target?

No it does not require more running around. The MDPS chakra spots are actually closer to the middle where you are likely to be for most of the mechanics. You are also already pre-positioned for virus in the MDPS position and don't have to run to a corner. There is no difference in running with the other group on bibliotaph load.

I feel like people are just following the "norm" without actually stopping to think about what they are doing with their group. I have yet to meet someone who can give me a seriously valid reason for why you need at least 2 MDPS for this fight. If that is the case, then I hope the word spreads so people stop demanding 2 MDPS.

i think maybe because its cause you can force the two ranged to be tethered together when it comes to virus? and they will always know they will be together? 3 ranged makes it difficult to predict who will get what status during virus.

Searing Wind on DPS during Virus is baited by being the further two dps targets, it makes zero difference what the dps composition is.

After having just done O7S on my BLM taking a MDPS position, I can happily say there is no difference in terms of mechanics or DPS for doing this. The mechanics were just as easy to perform, if not a little easier due to the close proximity of the chakra position.

The only serious reason I could think of was to have as wide a distribution of loot type receivers as possible, to minimise the chance of wasting loot. Failing that, if you already have a non-DRG melee in your group, you might wish to enforce DRG for utility if you already have a BRD/MCH and RDM in your group.

It is completely unnecessary to enforce two MDPS before either has joined. You could just as easily bring 3 RDPS and 1 DRG if you want the DRG utility.

This sounds like a stealth "pf excluding BLM" kind of post. For pugs it probably doesn't matter as much as for statics, but if nothing else loot distribution should be considered. 3 magic ranged or 2 physical ranged are going to be completing for the same loot. That means 2 out 3 possible melee drops might hit the floor. 2 melee/2 ranged has been a standard comp nearly the whole life of this game, it shouldn't catch you by surprise.

because loot, 3 range means 2 of them are going to fight for loot.
