Cleric's Stance

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this but its something that constantly irks me while playing CNJ.

Is there a localizational(is that a word?) reason why the ability which "Increases potency of attack spells" is defined as the stance of a "cleric"? Although the actual word cleric merely means association with the clergy and has no real astral or umbral affinity, it is very common for games to use the word "cleric" synonymous with the "White Mage" class of said game.

All that makes sense, it would seem entirely logical that a Conjurer(White Mage) who heals and raises people would have an ability called "Cleric's stance" representing their holy disposition towards the battle. However... it doesn't seem very "cleric"y for that ability to increase the potency of attack magic since their main agenda would be to heal people.

It could be named something more fitting like "Forsaken Stance", referring to the taboo nature of wielding the Twelveswood's elementals for the reason of chaos/pain/personal gain.

Just my personal take on the ability. I'd be interested in hearing the reason behind the name (if it has any in-depth lore connection like you guys are so good at :P) or if it was just something that got strangely translated from another language.

When i picture a cleric, I picture a priest with a shield and a mace.. ready to fight. I don't see anything wrong with the name of this spell.

I've been thinking about it, but haven't brought it up. Looking at the Japanese patch notes, it *almost* looks like it reads "Crusade[r] Stance" (limited Japanese literacy here).

And from a Crusader standpoint, that does sound more aggressive. Where I do imagine a cleric to be less offensive.

But I yield to whichever way the localization goes.

edit: It *may* be a form of censorship. I recall a friend of mine in Ragnarok/Warcraft days whose name was changed due, cited as a religiously offensive name. Mehka Gallant... and he may have been a Paladin before he rerolled again.

I guess it comes down to your setting's context. While a lot of fantasy settings will allow persons of the cloth to participate in combat, this is not the case in real life. D&D for example.

It depends on which way Loc wanted to interpret the use of "cleric" in these circumstances.

Thats an interesting observation and I think youre right with your edit. I think a lot of people (game developers included) avoid the word crusade (and crusader) for the negative relationship the word has with its real life event BUT I find it funny everyone loves the word templar...lol oh the irony.

When I picture a Cleric, I picture a mage with a healing shiv.

It's called crusade stance in English in Japanese version. Crusade at least calls to mind bloodthirst violent christians marching to smite heathens and heretics.
