Do the symbols mean something else that I'm not aware of?

Besides the "no" marks and the numbers -- do the shapes mean something outside of simply marking someone?

For example, I often mark the healer with a shape so that when I'm getting focused, I can find them quickly amid that bright blue background. I don't see well, so it's much easier for me to find, say, a circle, versus a tiny icon of a staff beside their name.

But oftentimes they remove it, and I cannot tell them that it helps me greatly. After reading the "hello-means-burst" thread, I started to wonder if shapes mean something else, and would appreciate if anyone could enlighten me if that's the case!

If we could assign marks for the local client that would be preferred instead of global marks. As a healer i hate having something above my head and I feel that situational awareness is key. Great you marked me but if I am greyed out my mark is useless. Being aware of where your party members are is also a key element to being a good team player. Because if your healer is getting attacked then it may be beneficial to help relieve the pressure. One of my friends who PvP's with me is a MCH, she basically uses me as bait and so I will sit there and heal myself while she Flamethrows everyone who is attacking me.

Yes! That's a great idea. Because I don't want to distract you. I will go suggest that in the UI forum, maybe they'll look into it!

Circle is probably getting removed because people are using it as part of burst macro.
the orginal macro was like

But I think some people use Circle at the end of attack1

most melee use circle at the end of their countdown, mark your healer with bind or something

Unfortunately, due to the lack of quick chat, people result to using the shapes/markers and quick chat. On Chaos, at least, we tend to use "Hello" when indicating we're ready to burst.

As a healer on Chaos, I find I do get marked with the Sqaure a fair bit, so perhaps try different shapes to see which one people don't already use in their burst macro.
