Steps:
1. At gathering Node with successfully met condition for (+1 gathering attempts)
2. 4 successful gathers (out of 5 attempts)
3. Brunt Force SHOULD become available, but does not.
4. Attempt 5 succeeds, making chain 5
5. Brunt Force becomes momentarily available, and node disengages because no more attempts left

Issue recreated on two machines, and reported incorrectly at http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...ll-Brunt-Force by the second poster back in 2013.

If you look at the text that pops up on your screen as you chain gather, you will notice that chain #1 appears on your second consecutive gathering attempt. Likewise, chain #2 is on the third, chain #3 is on the fourth and chain #4 is on the fifth.
