Client-sided GC Saluting by NPCs?

I just thought it'd be a really neat thing to implement if NPC's that share your Grand Company would /gcsalute you, and I wanted to see what other people thought too.

Ideally, each NPC would have a built-in rank assigned, and they would either return your salute (if they were higher-ranking) or salute you once you get close enough (if you outrank them).

To avoid the headache of figuring out the exact rank of each and every GC-affiliated NPC, ranks could be divided as simply as three ranking groups:

• High command (CDR and above)
• Commissioned officers (2LT/1LT/CPT)
• Enlisted soldiers (SGT/CPL/PVT)

As mentioned earlier, NPC's who rank lower than you would salute you on sight once you got close enough; those who rank higher than you or equal to you would only return your salute if you salute them first.

Anyway, just a nice idea that might increase immersion a bit, especially for players who are really into their respective GC's.

I like the idea, just as I wish our characters would do the same respectful gestures towards npcs that others in a cut scene or group are doing...such as bows. So many times, we will be among a dignitary or other person who normally would be saluted or bowed to and all of the other npcs in the group will bow and we just stand there looking like a disrespectful chump. :(. I sometimes will do a salute or bow gesture to an npc when appropriate just for the immersion, as you put it. I would be polite IRL so why wouldn’t be character do so?

I'm with Neko in this. We specifically learn "Eastern Bow" because it's culturally important in The East but we never use it again, not even when meeting royalty! It seems very wasteful.

+1. One of my favorite little nods is, when you enter the CNJ guild, one of the conjurers at the entrance does the Serpent salute. I wish there was more of that.

While that seems cool, and a neat little easter egg. They already have that sort of thing in the housing districts where you will get a salute from members of your grand company

All you did was prove that the system for it is already in the game, they just need to wire more characters to share that logic. Preferably outside of housing, a part of the game many people still don't have access to

What they have will most likely be as far as they go in that regard. And everyone has access to housing areas. Apartments are plentiful, free companies houses, and there are still houses on moderately populated servers. They already acknowledge your rank with random npc's outside as well. If you do any quests with members of your grand company they will mention your rank.

I agree that this is a neat idea that helps world build a little bit.

As kamenkuro pointed out, in some form this is already implemented and I think by spreading it to ALL NPCs might be something that Devs could consider too time consuming or unnecessary.

It depends on how they go about it. At the very least they can consider adding it to new NPCs moving forward, or whenever revisiting old NPCs for whatever reason.
