My apologies for delivering these words of mine to you in such a surreptitious manner, which I am doubtless that you will disapprove of. In spite of my best efforts, however, I have found myself unable to say these things to you in a more direct capacity. For this, I beg forgiveness.
But what I will not beg forgiveness for are the words themselves: Master Severian, how many years has it been since you lost your beloved W'nahja to the Calamity? And how many moons has it been since you and I engaged in the ill-fated attempt to return her to life?
I would never attempt to disparage your feelings for her, nor to make you forget her, nor to take her place in your heart. I am not so pompous as to presume that I could ever have the ability to do such a thing, even if I had the gall to try.
But was it not you, Master, who told me after the incident with Heartstrike that you wish to devote yourself to the here and now, to live for this day and the people in it? And did you not say that to do such would be a far more rewarding life than fixating on the past?
Master Severian, allow me to put my sentiments plainly: I am here. I am now. And, if you will allow me this great arrogance for but a moment, I wish for you to know that I desire to be more than just a talented apprentice to you.
I will not make any further attempts beyond this letter to persuade you, Master Severian. If you do not bring this matter up from this day on, then neither will I.

Not a day goes by I don't look back and think, "What if we met in a different life? Would things have turned out the same?"
Do you remember the day we met? I thought you were just another frostbitten frown to turn upside-down. A noble pain in the arse. An arrogant, narrow-minded, proud Coerthan fool. I, of course, never said any of that out loud. Twelve knows how much I don't say to the people barking orders at me whenever they need something done...
But then you showed me you were none of those things. You weren't arrogant, you weren't narrow-minded, you weren't proud, and you certainly weren't a fool. Some of your countrymen called you a bastard. Some of your countrymen called you a hero. Hero... that's not a bad title for you, Haurchefant. Not bad at all.
What was it you said to me, before we parted ways? "A smile better suits a hero"?
A lot has happened while you've been away. The Dragonsong War came to an end, along with Ishgard's corrupt leadership. And now? We've liberated two nations from Imperial rule! Did you notice anything in what I wrote? We. Not I.
We.
Out on those distant shores, hardships were many, but there was no shortage of smiles. Even now, as I write this letter to you, I'm smiling. We saved Ala Mhigo! We saved Doma!
You saved them.

I know that we have not often seen eye to eye, however I would like you to know that you have served as an inspiration to me. While I could not understand your intent back when you first tested me in Vesper Bay, now it is different. Some time ago, when I encountered Midgardsomr and the blessing of light was shattered from me, a fog began to lift from my mind. While I once more rebuilt the blessing, the fog remains gone and I have had time to think clearly on some things. Ever since the incident with the Warriors of Darkness, my perception of things has shifted some, call it a changing point. They were my antithesis, true, but they were not inherently evil and were trying to save their world. Was that your intent on bringing them here? I must say your methods are quite unorthodox, but I believe I am starting to understand. You’ve been trying to have me see reality for what it is instead of what Hydaelyn wants me to believe. You have never given up on me, and I appreciate that. This has turned into quite the lengthy letter, so I will digress. If you ever find yourself in the vicinity of Shirogane, you can find me at my arms shop in the 6th ward, location 15 and we can share coffee and words and perhaps the chance to learn of one another better.

Your determination, steel and will to help your people and allies is a very admirable attribute, and I hope one day that I may be able to repay the favor, especially after all that you've done for me along the way to liberating Doma.
